About the Author

Shaykh Ahmad al-Alawi was the founder of a popular modern Sufi order, the Darqawiyya Alawiyya. He is one of the most important Sufi saints of the last century. Khalid Williams is a translator who specializes in translations from Arabic with a particular focus on Islamic studies and Sufism.

Accessible perhaps only to those with a working knowledge of Sufism

This is not a big book, but it packs punch. The author is the famed "Sufi saint of the twentieth century" whose posterity is better deserving than that. The English is superb, the topics vital. The publisher is serious and mainstream. There is surpassingly little in the way of Qur'an commentary available in English. This represents a contribution in a limited but essential sense. The commentary is highly esoteric and accessible perhaps only to those with a working knowledge of Sufism. For such people it is a gem. Wahhabis and Salafists steer clear!

This book is amazing! The testimonies on how praying Psalm 91 has impacted lives are modern day miracles. This is a must read for those who have loved ones in the military. A naval sailor and his Mom had a pact to pray Psalm 91 at the same time every day. Well, his sub was under attack at the time he was supposed to start praying. A torpedo was headed straight at the sub. He started to pray Psalm 91 as was his Mom wherever she was and the torpedo veered off at the last moment unexplainably. Psalm 91 has been prayed to protect families from natural disasters like tornadoes, protect children from criminal assaults, etc. This book is a beautiful reminder of how much God loves us and cares for us.

Superb Book! You'll Be Glad You Got It

I came across this book last August and was drawn to it. Once I purchased I couldn't put it down. I've since bought several copies for friends and family and their reaction has been the same. Whether you are a soldier or Marine going into combat, a cop or a fireman or just a family person concerned about your protection and that of your family, you'll want to read this book. Peggy Joyce Ruth has assembled many inspirational stories of veterans and several policemen and firemen and explained how their use of this Psalm has kept them from harm when they went 'in harm's way'. Some of the stories from the Iraq veterans are absolutely miraculous. Do yourself and your family a favor; get this book, read and start praying your own Psalm 91 covenant everyday. You'll be glad you did.

"Psalm 91" by Peggy Joyce Ruth contains "Real-Life Stories of God's Shield of Protection and What This Psalm Means For You and Those You Love..." This amazing book has several valuable features. The beginning of the book breaks down the psalm in such a way that enables the reader to understand the passage, itself. This section is followed by a series of testimonies of God's protection being lived out in real-life circumstances. The end of the book contains the psalm itself, written as a prayer, with blanks inserted where the name of a loved one would go.

This wonderful work of non-fiction is more than a Bible study. It is a source of encouragement that gives examples of how these verses of scripture became alive and active to others so that we can be on the lookout for similar evidences of God's provision and protection for us. This book helped open my eyes to the truth of scripture and motivated me to watch for God's protection activity in my own life. It has also given me a beautiful prayer to say over others. I highly recommend this book.

Lots of Stephen King fans feel that his horror novels are dwarfed by what they consider his masterpiece, the genre-bending Dark Tower books. They're a little like the sprawling epics of J.R.R. Tolkien, Robert Jordan, and George Lucas, but then again, they're really like nothing else in this world (or King's).

This set collects the first three. The Gunslinger introduces the hero Roland, who must reach the Dark Tower in order to save his universe, Mid-World. There are passageways between our world and Mid-World, and a New York City boy named Jake gets shoved in front of a car by Jack Mort ("death"), is killed, and finds himself alive in Roland's world. He becomes Roland's surrogate son.

In book 2, The Drawing of the Three, Roland is attacked by marvelous, poisonous "lobstrosities" and enters our world for help. He takes heroin addict Eddie Dean from 1987 New York and Odetta Holmes from 1964 New York as his team. In a powerful time-tripping scene, Roland confronts Jack Mort and actually changes Jake's Earth history, which has heady implications for Roland's world.

In The Waste Lands, book 3, Roland and company get ensnared in a civil war in the urban waste of Lud, acquire a delightful talking pet named Oy the Bumbler, and find themselves captives of a psychotic train called Blaine the Mono.

The plot is complex, yet weirdly logical. But take warning: this series is addictive, and you may need to also buy book 4, Wizard and Glass. Otherwise, you won't know what happened when Blaine went insane with Roland's gang onboard.

About the Author
Carl "Tuchy" Palmieri was born in 1942 in an old mansion belonging to the former mill owner of the factory where his father worked. His family was one of six related families that occupied the mansion. The second son of Italian immigrants, Carl grew up in Westport, Connecticut. After receiving a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Bridgeport he began his career marketing and installing accounting computers for the Burroughs Corporation. Twenty-one years later, in 1987, he started his own computer business. Carl is also the author of a series of self-help books. Today Carl lives with his wife, Susan, in Fairfield, Connecticut. He has three children, two stepchildren, and 12 grandchildren. His nickname, Tuchy, comes from having been one of three Carls in his family. There was a "Big Carl," a "Carl the Twin," and "Carluch," which meant "Little Carl." "Carluch" evolved into "Carlatuch," "Tuch," and finally, "Tuchy."

An inspiration reborn

I would like to thank Tuchy Palmieri and Healing-habits.com for finding and republishing Children of the Second Birth by S. M Shoemaker Jr. Since Mr. Shoemaker had originally written and compiled this book it had gone out of print and without this republishing would not be readily available for us to read today. Children of the Second Birth is a collection of 18 testimonials/ histories of how ordinary people have been transformed by bringing Christ into their lives. It also shows us how these changed lives affect and change others lives. Many of these people were good church going people to start out with but had not received the fullness of giving themselves to Christ. The book is easy to read and for those with short time spans available for reading each chapter is a complete story unto itself. Although the book was written back in the 1920's the stories are still relevant and touching today. I hope many more will read and be inspired by this book for years to come.

A Ray of Hope for Lost Souls

Stories shared from the heart of the "reformed" man with a bright future ahead. "Children of the Second Birth" is shown the light of another day through the republishing efforts of Tuchy Palmieri, who himself has developed the knack for rescuing obscure titles that many have not had the pleasure of seeing. The life experiences shared within its pages speak to the soul, reaching for the dark places some may share with the many narrators. Alas, it is the human condition...we all struggle with temptation in its many forms each and every day. It is the strength we find within ourselves, our beliefs, our morals, our family ties, which keep us, grounded and aid us in rising beyond our current conditions.

One story, entitled "What the Law Could Not Do", tells of a young man making many life-altering mistakes, yet surviving to become an inspiration to all those within his reach. In particular, this tale imparts that one start in the belief of religion at their own level of understanding and acceptance rather than an "all or none" mindset. No Longer Lost

If it weren't for Tuchy Palmieri, there would be lots of great stories lost to time. Fortunately for us, his passion for reprinting great stories, biographies, and quotes is not waning. We are all blessed by the "dreadful perpetuity of print." Supported by the Healing-Habits organization, he continues to find great literature that will inspire people to be better.

Samuel Shoemaker had a great desire to spur others to spiritually deep places. He did that through many different venues, and the printed books might be one of his greatest gifts to us. When I read these stories of faith, I was reminded that the struggles of modern man are not terribly modern. Humanity has always fought with the Devil to have a closer relationship with its creator and these stories are a testimony to that fact.

Buy this book. Read it one story at a time. It won't be hard for you to find ways to relate to the people Shoemaker shares, even if they did live in the early 20th century. Don't be afraid to let go of your post-modern self to discover a deeper truth within. This book can lead you there.

Perfect for everyday conversation/getting around

If you are traveling to Japan for a day, a week, or even a month or two, Japanese For Dummies will be perfect for you. The 3 audio CDs come with a booklet with all of the vocabulary, inlcuding little tips here and there. What I do is I make flash cards for the words, practice memorizing them, and then quiz myself with the audio CDs (which of course I rip and put on my computer and mp3 player). It's perfect because you can store the audio files on your mp3 player and quiz yourself anywhere anytime.

I will be in Japan for a little under a month, and after a week of practice, I can already introduce myself and hold a very simple conversation. There is no way you can learn the language in less than a month, let alone less than a year. That's why this product is so great. It comes with about 37 sections, each one building on the next.

CD1 has saying hello and goodbye, introducing yourself, important nouns to know, simple question words, an overview of numbers, etc
CD2 has adjectives, verbs, the creation of simple sentences
CD3 has specifics, like things you should know in the office, a restaurant, the bank, hotel, etc

I have tried the Berlitz Japanese in 30 days and a few other Audio/Books and they just did not compare. The others had very poor audio and a learning style I just couldn't deal with. The audio on Japanese for Dummies is extremely clear and easy to understand. In addition, Japanese For Dummies is more useful for learning by memorization, not so much understanding the grammar perfectly. However, If you put 3-4 weeks into this, an hour a day, you will be able to survive in the streets of Japan!

This is a great product in spite of me giving it a 3 star review.

I gave it 3 stars for 2 reasons
#1 - It is grossly inadequate in terms of content. 3CD's are way too short
#2 - It is not socially correct at times.

Example. "I" in Japanese, they use "Watashi". What they don't point out is that's a feminine reference for women referring to themselves. Men say "Boku" when saying "I". I've had conversations with friends who are Japanese immigrants to the U.S who talk about funny experiences listening to American men speak Japanese who say "Watashi" because it makes them come across as sounding gay in the homosexual sense.

It won't clarify Nana and Shichi both mean Seven, and it won't clarify any other technical nuances.

It's worth knowing a little Japanese before you pick this up but it's a start over anything and it's well worth it. I've done a little Rosetta stone and have been teaching myself off and on; despite the boring nature of this CD, it has helped a lot. I've listened to all the CD's countless times and I skip back and forth randomly. I'll listen to the 1st CD 10 times, go through the others 10 times, and go back to the first one and repeat a single track 10 times because I realized what it is teaching more and more, or I notice a lesson being taught I don't remember hearing before even though I listened to it 10 times. Break up the monotony to give yourself the attention to catch the lessons and the nuances of the language.

It's worth a start, but don't expect to be able to use it in any social setting. You will still have the language skills of a brick no matter how much you listen to it.

A word of caution: Do not think of yourself as a dummy. Otherwise you will never learn anything. "I think, therefore I am" is extremely true statement. Even more so true is "What my peers think, so shall I become." Which is why it's critically important to surround yourself with the people who will help you grow and not pull you back. Make friends in/from japan, online and offline, switch all the language settings on your computer and websites to Japanese (try it on Facebook)
