Great Wood-fired How-to!

I recently watched an episode of Man, Food, Fire on the Cooking Channel titled "Outrageous Ovens". The first half featured a barrel oven in Oregon. I was fascinated by the oven which appeared to be highly fuel-efficient and seemingly inexpensive to build. I immediately began searching for information on barrel ovens and found this book.

It is a great little book; clearly written, nicely organized, and well illustrated with a wealth of information and resources. I like the fact that it takes in to account the varying selection of materials and approaches, depending on budget, climate and locale. The book presents the techniques in a manner that is not at all intimidating to someone like me who has little knowledge of masonry techniques. The book makes the prospect of building a barrel oven both technically and financially doable.

The other very appealing aspect of this book is the modesty of the authors. This book doesn't purport to be the definitive tome on barrel ovens. It presents barrel oven construction as a fairly recent and evolving subject and actively solicits participation and feedback by any and all.

I highly recommend this to anyone who has ever considered building any kind of wood-fired oven. Even if you are considering something grander such as a domed or vaulted wood-fired oven, this would be a great starter and/or companion project.

I will try to update my review when I finish building my own barrel oven!

Careful when buying this book!

Careful when buying this book. It does a pretty nice job explaining the masonry part of the job but tells little about the metal parts (and there are lots of special metal parts). Be aware that the authors expect you to buy the metal kit from their store. Towards the end of the book there is mention of a future second book covering the metal pieces but over a year down the road I've not seen it and I follow their website looking for more information. There are also quite a few recipes in this book which was disappointing filler.

food and fire - a book for people interested in delicious self-sufficiency

I'm very excited about this book. I read it in one night- from the intros to the recipes in the back.
I'm a natural builder, who's enjoying the way that cob earthen ovens are becoming so much more well known. However, there are two main drawbacks to the more common earthen oven system (where the cook builds a fire in the oven cavity and then removes the coals)...It takes hours for the heat of the oven to accumulate, and it's difficult to cook larger items, because sometimes the door size can be limiting (and if someone makes a bigger oven to accommodate a bigger dish of food, than it will take even longer to heat up.)
Eva and Max have built and studied many such ovens. And so I think it's even more interesting that they're so taken with the barrel oven system. It seems like a great alternative. They heat up in 2o minutes, and can cook a wide range of foods, and Eva and Max have shown through their own work that barrel ovens can be beautiful.
I appreciate the simplicity of the book, the careful diagrams, the open discourse with the reader asking for feedback and engagement to improve this system, the examples of barrel ovens that they and others have built, and the obvious love which they bring to craft, food, and fire.
For the people that consider the metal work of the project daunting, they offer resources, and kits.
I also like how their book brings me closer to the earthen building tradition in Argentina (which is where their journey with the oven started). People have already been exploring the resourcefulness of barrel ovens there for some time.
I'm looking forward to building my own, hopefully this summer.

A Masterly Edition of the Dead Sea Scroll version of the Old Testament

This is probably the most important edition yet for the textual criticism purposes of the Old Testament of the Bible. It presents the hebrew and aramaic (and a few greek) transcriptions of the scrolls and fragments of the Old Testament that survived. It unfortunately does not include all the fragments of the old testament texts, since many of them are too small to have any significant comprehension or analysis or they depart so much from the traditional text, that they are viewed as as nonbiblical. Despite that flaw this is a very affordable edition compared to the other scholarly versions of the Dead Sea Scrolls out there. The only superior edition is the DJD series, but that is probably somewhere between 1000-2000 dollars if you want the complete fragments of the old testament text. whereas this version is not the complete, but it is all the "important" fragments and scrolls of the Old Testament texts that were found in the DSS, and costs only between 100-200 dollars. For someone who cannot afford the DJD edition, this inexpensive edition is extremely valuable and crucial to any true scholar of the Bible.

A great feature in this text is its citation references; it includes extensive comparison to the most important manuscript versions of the Bible, giving however only a very rare attention to versions like the Armenian and Ethiopic texts. in particular, it compares the DSS reading to the Aramaic Targums, the Syriac versions (especially the Peshitta), the primary divisions of the Septuagint, the traditional Masoretic text, the Samaritan version for the Torah, and the Latin Vulgate version. I am a bit critical of some of their reconstructions and I also have to question the accuracy of some of their transcriptions (its likely they sometimes misread the original msnuscripts and noted a difference that simply is not there), but notwithstanding, because of its extensive references to the major versions, this is a highly valuable version, so any errors on the transcribers part should be able to be corrected if the student is diligent and wisely analyses the differences. The majority of their reconstructions are fairly reliable, but a few are questionable; they it should be warned have an uncanny preference for the Masoretic text in their reconstruction of the surrounding portions of text which were not found in the DSS but are presented to help the reader comprehend the context of the fragments found. This preference of the Masoretic text in the reconstructions is incredibly deceptive to the gullible student who gives too much credence to the accuracy and quality of these scholarly works.

Well thought out learning process

This is a cool book. Each page presents one Yoga Asana with the Sanskrit name and the English translation. Then each stick figure is presented in four stages of completion down the left side with four blocks to the right of each stage for drawing practice. I procrastinated about the price but it was worth it. The ability to draw yoga pose stick figures has made my note taking during and after a Yoga class much more efficient.

SWEET REIT Knowledge of Quality

The early chapters stick to basics and are easily a door into this new real estate sector.
Great explanations of private versus public traded REITs and ease of selling (liquidity) or buying.
It is a reference of quality for quality listing the credit ratings for the traded REITs.
Another early chapter delves into an easy review of how to understand cash flows and the use of FFO or free cash flow or AFFO to measure value. Excellent charts and lists and references.
I am GLAD to have this one on my shelf.
The last chapters go into depth slowly for the more complicated attributes for measuring a REIT and would certainly be important for any CPA.
I followed much of it thanks to the writing quality and explanations provided....up to the very last page.

About the Author

Donald Michael Kraig graduated from UCLA with a degree in philosophy. He also studied public speaking and music (traditional and experimental) on the university level. After a decade of personal study and practice, he began ten years of teaching courses in the Southern California area on such topics as Kabalah, Tarot, Magic, Tantra, and Psychic Development. He was a member of many spiritual and magical groups and was an initiated Tantric.

Great for beginners

I was struggling to get started in a Hermetic-based tradition, and this fit the bill perfectly. Well organized and laid out with great introduction and pacing. Easy to understand if you're a complete novice.

GREAT FOR THE SOLITARY PRACTICIONER!

THIS BOOK IS GREAT FOR MODERN TIMES WHEREAS A LOT OF BOOKS ON THIS SUBJECT IS INSURMOUNTABLE TO GET INTO AND IMPRACTICAL AND UNUSABLE.IT'S MY MAGICAL FOUNDATION.

its good but

I erased my old review to give a better one based on my experience. i would recommend this to a beginner. but a beginner that wants to learn ceremonial magic. this isint a book of spells. u will not learn how to do spells if thats what u want. it has rituals that require a very long time to perform learn and understand and they are not easy. the author says u can perform these in 15 mins, to me that is to short for a beginner. to get in a relaxing mode alone takes 10 mins, the first ritual is four steps. dont try them all at once. break them down until u get it one at a time. also the book only gives u a outline of modern magic, there will be many questions not being answered and u will have to do a lot of researching. it gives u all the steps for performing the rituals in full but u wont prob know why u are doing them. at least i didnt. it took me a good couple of months to fully understand the good use behind the banishing ritual. im completly new to it. i would say study this book along with "kabbalisitc handbook for the practicing magician". it would save u lots of trouble. it would give u more in depth of ur magic work in every ritual u do. i would only recommenced this to a beginner.
