The Tennis Book is Better, Even for Musicians

I literally read the Inner Game of Tennis right before I read this book. I was fascinated and felt it had immediate effects on my playing. I thought it'd be an appropriate Christmas gift for my drum teacher who, without knowing it, uses a similar approach and had never heard of the book. While looking for it on Amazon, I noticed they had The Inner Game of Music and, after reading some of the glowing reviews, I decided to buy that one instead as it seemed more relevant. I bought a copy for me and my teacher. After reading most of it, I ordered the Tennis one for my teacher as his gift. I just thought the Tennis one's concepts are better explained and more sensical in a way that can be applied to any discipline, including music. Clearly Mr. Green is a string-instrument player (bass) and tends to play mostly in a classical setting and I think the book will have special appeal to similar musicians. I play a few instruments, but drums are my main instrument and I just didn't see much to help me there that I didn't get from the Tennis version in a more effective manner. In particular, I need to work on my improvisation skills and I thought this book would especially help me in that regard. It didn't. The Improvisation chapter is one of the last, and one of the weakest in my opinion. This book is heavy on examples and exercises that I find difficult to get a benefit from as an adult. I'm pretty well-rounded and educated in my musical tastes and experiences and the information on why people enjoy or don't enjoy some or all music seemed a little elementary and little-related to what I think the "Inner Game" franchise is about.

Heightened levels of confidence, creativity and enjoyment

The book's themes are universal and can be applied to anyone at any stage of musical development. The book helps you to focus more on making music and connecting emotionally with it. It also allows you to eliminate those internal demons which plague people's abilities. You can put the book's methods into practice almost immediately and at the same time spend a lifetime studying and absorbing the techniques at your own pace. Be prepared to abandon conventional methods of learning and really tap into your full potential.

Not A Good Transcription

This book is okay but is nowhere near as succinct as the Inner Game of Tennis by Tim Gallwey. This book tends to go off on too many tangents and often repeats itself incessantly. It mostly just discusses ways of keeping Self 1 at bay and just goes on and on about it. It would have been nice if the author could mainly have focused his attention on directly transcribing Tim Gallwey's original 1974 book, but this it does not do. The author just puts too much of his own baloney into the mix. This book is still somewhat insightful, but I definitely would not say it was "hard to put down". Because in truth, it is all too easy to put this one down, and often for long stretches of time. But I still think it was worth purchasing for the heck of it.

Necessary But Could Be So Much Better

Dorsch and Dorsch's Understanding Anesthesia Equipment is simply the most thorough book on anesthesia equipment out there that I am aware of. You will find most of the general basics of anesthesia equipment in Barash's Clinical Anesthesia and even more summary books like Stoelting's Basics of Anesthesia) and Morgan & Mikhail's Clinical Anesthesiology. Nevertheless, those books tend to not give you the ins-and-outs of all of the various equipment out there. Dorsch & Dorsch provide very detailed information ad nauseum. However, the endless black-and-white diagrams and black-and-white photos (though it appears very accurate) make the book very difficult to find the precise information that you are looking for. And the black-and-white diagrams tend to be much more difficult to understand than is necessary. For a book that has been through so many revisions and costs well upward of a hundred bucks, I would expect some color photos and some better constructed color diagrams.

The book does seem thorough, but is simply so much more difficult to use than it needs to be. Using Dorsch & Dorsch as a base text, we are strongly in need of a full revision aimed at formatting, photo, and diagram revisions.

The website included in the book offers a searchable text and a test bank. The search engine on the text is poor and very difficult to use. I find myself going to the chapter of interest and using a ctrl-f browser-based search of the page. The online quizzes are the exact same as is found at the end of each chapter. I have taken about half of the quizzes and have found errors in the online-based quiz bank in approximately half of those that I took. In need of some quality control. Nevertheless, I am appreciative of the online access to the text.

Disappointed

I am sad that this will be the last volume by authors I have relied on since I began in anesthesia in 1981. This is my third purchase of one of their works but I must say that I am dissappointed. Much of the charm of earlier editions (I own 1st and 4th) seems to be missing and there seems to be a reliance on manufacturer's supplied illustrations. Explanations and diagrams seem to come directly from the manufactuer.

That being said I would still recommend this book to students (both SRNAs and Resident physcians)as a required text. This book will alow you to be competent to trouble shoot a system while waiting for BME to arrive,or for you to feel confident to swap a machine in the middle of a case. It gives you a familiarization of much adjunct equipment before you use it the first time. It apprises you of possible hazards and deals with evnvironmental issues in anesthetizing locations.

Not their best work, but have not seen anyone else consistently cover this topic over the span of their work. A replacement will be hard to find, and future practitioners will suffer with their retirement.

its a "stay at home book" tho
big and heavy
the pages are not as easy to read since its all black and white and there's alot of material to read plus the pictures are not as many as i would have liked
but still a very good book
glad i got it for my residency
always on top of my info because of it

Very insightful for cafeteria managers!

I find this book very helpful since I run a cafeteria for public employees which is somewhat different than running a private restaurant. Workers in my building make very high salaries and deman high quality, lots of options and menu variety Mr. Ible explains how to keep the menu varies without making it overwhelming for your cook staff.
His advice on Customer Serve also very helpful. Customers have many options when it comes to getting food, so it is vital to treat each one as best you can.
But I think that best insight of the book is that it teaches you how to approach your job in a systematic manner, following tried and true patterns that increase both quality and efficiency of food and cash flow.
I recommend this book highly.

Extremely useful

This book is very rewarding for cafeteria operators. Real life examples are easy to follow and are very practical. Detailed calculations of expenses help with cash flow and budgeting. Food safety is properly explained.
Enjoyable to read!
