Here's a truly charming 19th Century fantasy from the acclaimed Victorian novelist & poet George Meredith, written in his youth. In what was obviously a labor of love, Meredith pours his considerable childhood affection for the Arabian Nights into this tale of a humble but heroic Persian barber, Shibli Bagarag, who finds himself charged with the quest of shaving the impressive beard of the powerful clothier Shagpat ... but let Meredith's own words introduce the story:

"Now the story of Shibli Bagarag, and of the ball he followed, and of the subterranean kingdom he came to, and of the enchanted palace he entered, and of the sleeping king he shaved, and of the two princesses he released, and of the Afrite held in subjection by the arts of one and bottled by her, is it not known as 'twere written on the finger-nails of men and traced in their corner robes?"

With the aid of the enchantress Noorna, Shibli Bagarag sets out on his journey, all related in the faux-Orientalist prose of the above excerpt. Those looking for even a tenuous relationship to the reality of the Middle East will look in vain; this is an Arabia of Western fancy, an Antipodes of the Western psyche. Clearly this won't appeal to everyone, so be warned. But when taken on its own terms, it's no less enjoyable & convincing than any faux-Medieval fantasy of today. And frankly, it's a lot more fun!

Returned to print by the legendary Ballantine Adult Fantasy Series some 40 years ago, this particular edition features the typically lush & vibrant cover art of those volumes, in this case by Ray Cruz, along with a short & enthusiastic introduction by editor Lin Carter. It's a perfect example of the possibilities of the heroic (or mock-heroic) fantasy, before the genre became so bogged down in overly-detailed literalism & poor mimicry of Tolkien, many times removed from the original source. If you can find a copy, you may be in for a delightful surprise -- recommended!

K.A. Stroud formerly was a professor in the Department of Mathematics at Lanchester Polytechnic (now Coventry University) in the United Kingdom. He is also the lead author of the very popular Engineering Mathematics and Advanced Engineering Mathematics, which are also available from Industrial Press.

Dexter J. Booth teaches in the United Kingdom at the University of Huddersfield. He is the author of several mathematics books, including with Stroud the latest editions of Engineering Mathematics and Advanced Engineering Mathematics.

limited, but excellent within those limitations. Good for the how, not the why

Ok, this is not a beginners book. You NEED to know your algebra, trig relations, and calculus very well before you start on this, in particular differentiaion of log, exponential, trigonometric functions, implicit differentiation, integration by parts and substitution. Also good if your up on partial fractions, complex numbers and of course, your algebra. There is not attempt at revision of these ocncepts in the book and no appendices containing it. You'll probably need a table of integrals handy too when you work through it on the questions.

Ok, that aside, the book is purely about solving ODE's. It's contents include

program 1: First order Differential Equations

program 2: Second order differential equations

program 3: series 1

program 4: series 2

program 5: power series solutions of ODEs

program 6: Introdction to laplace trasnforms

program 7: Laplace transforms 2

program 8: laplace transforms 3

program 9: Z transforms

program 10: Matrix Algebra

program 11: Numerical solutions of ODEs

OK, the book has all the answers (not worked) to all of the questions. The questions are plentiful and take the form of review exercises (for each sub program), Test Exercises for each program and Further Exercises for each program. As far as I can tell there are no errors in the answers. I will warn you though: some of the further exercises are difficult! (we talking: multiple change of variable substitutions, partial fractions followed by integration by parts all to solve one ode!).

The teaching of the methods (algorithms if you prefer) is rquite strong with multiple fully worked examples for each concept and then questions for you to answer followed by fully worked solutions for those answers so you can see where you may have gone wrong. However strong this pedagogy is, there is little actual motivation for the work. There is no connection to applying ODE's to the real world. Also, some of the proofs are not what you would could rigorous, which will annoy the math students and please the engineers.

I suggest ODEs by Tennenbaum and Pollard (isbn: 0486649407) if you want motivation and just about every possible application of ODEs to real situations, in addition to this book. Do this book first perhaps to get the methods (algorithms) down and then go to Tennenbaum and Pollard for applying ODEs and filling in the gaps that this book leaves.

For somebody who just needs to know how, this is a good book: if you can't learn it from this book, then you probably aren't gonna get it without some help from a prof/ lecturer. if you want to know why, then it isn't so great (hence the loss ot stars).

So in conclusion, not bad. Does what it seeks to do extremely well, but what it seeks to do is the algorithms for solving ODEs, not applying ODEs and solving actual physical applications. Also, proofs lack some rigor and make a few assumptions.

Not a bad place to start learning differential equations.

This textbook is a relatively good place for self learners to begin their study of differential equations. The method used takes you step by step through the many worked out examples. The degree of calculus algebra, trig, and calculus needed is not overwhelming. A one year course in calculus is more than adequate. The book would receive a 5 rating if all the test problems and further problems were fully worked out. It is also lacking in first and second order word problems. The best answer for this is to find a copy of the Schaum's Solved Problems in Differential Equations which is out of print. What a shame. It would be wonderful if Schaum's updated and reprinted it. There is no better way to learn this material than to learn the fundamentals, try solving the problems, and then check against a solved solutions. Stroud's Programs 3-5 on series and Programs 6-8 on LaPlace Transforms are very well done. Program 10 on matrix algebra gives you a brief introduction to Linear Algebra including a brief introduction to eigenvalues and vectors. Program 11 on numerical solutions is dated. You will need to find training materials from Maple, Matlab, and Mathematica or other vendors. The Tennenbaum text mentioned in the other review is an excellent standard textbook available from Dover at a very modest price. For the mathematicians out there the derivations and theorems are more thorough as stated. The material in Stroud's programs 1-2 is much more fully covered by Tennenbaum. The issue with Tennenbaum is there are not enough worked out examples. Answers are given for the numerous problems but not worked out. I have not been able to find them solved on line which would be great for self learners like myself. The Dummies Series workbook on Differential Equations is pretty good although there are a couple of errors in the solutions that need to be fixed and the derivation of the LaPlace transform of the sin(x) could be much more straightforward. If you can afford it you can purchase the textbook which accompanies it. They are not a bad place to start and both together cost less than the Stroud text. The Differential Equations DeMystified text has a lot of interesting material in it. However,it is a difficult read and not a good learning tool. There are several standard textbooks on Differetial Equations. They are expensive books.

Guys Get This For Self Teaching & Add Tenenbaum Too!

This book is for the self taught gentleman. If you prefer to teach yourself, or are just not very good in a classroom setting, you know sitting for long hours and just listening... and for most of us guys does it's not why we picked the sciences. No we'd much rather get into it for ourselves! And this book is pretty darn good for that. Why pretty darn good vs. perfect? Well it doesn't really address the "theory" side of things. It just shows you the techniques themselves. For the theory you're probably better off with Ordinary Differential Equations by Morris Tenenbaum. I don't think Tenenbaum shows the step by step process as well as this book does. There were a couple of spots where I had to stop for a second because the next step wasn't quite so clear, but a few minutes of contemplation cleared things up.
But overall, if you really buckle down with this puppy, and keep doing the exercises on paper (not just in your head) it will teach you the essentials of differential equations. Then if you supplement it with Tenenbaum, well you'll be well versed. Better than one of the paper mill students of the modern University - unless your lucky enough to get an enthusiastic professor who also has talent in conveying his knowledge to you.
Lastly the book could use some more examples, but that would drive up the cost even more. Consider checking out Schaum's Differential Equations from your local library or school's library for more problems though. Quick and easy with the solutions in the back.

Short Summary:
This book succeeds as a self teaching guide to techniques, stops short on theory, and could also use a few more example problems, but does have enough to learn the basic idea for each technique.

The power of words

In this booklet, Hagin talks about the power of words. According to the Bible, WORDS destroy us or make us full of life, happiness, and health. Our words, the words we spoke yesterday, make life what it is today.

In Mark 11:23, Jesus said, "For verily I say unto you, that whoever shall SAY unto this mountain, Be though removed, and be though cast into the sea, and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he SAITH shall come to pass, he shall have whatever he SAITH."

He shall have whatsoever - THE WORDS - he speaks.

Hagin mentions that when he was healing himself from seemingly incurable health problems, it wasn't enough that he believed in his heart that he was healed, he realized that he also had to voice his belief, so he was repeating,

:I believe I receive healing for my deformed heart. I believe I receive healing for the incurable blood disease. I believe I receive healing for the paralysis. I believe I receive healing from the top of my head to the soles of my feet."

And within the hour, he was standing on his feet. What he doesn't mention in this booklet, but mentioned in his other books, that after he believed, and voiced his belief, nothing happened until he realized that he also had to demonstrate his faith - he had to act on that confession that he has already been healed.

However, this booklet is focused on the power of words, and he makes many good points. If you've ever listened to the sick person or the person who is suffering from some kind of lack, you can many times find out why they are sick and why they lack what they need by listening to how they speak about themselves and their needs. If they keep repeating "I don't have it ..." they're likely not going to have it.

Proverbs 12:18 says "... the tongue of the wise is health." You're not going to have health unless you talk health.

The Bible says "Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly". (Ps. 1:1) You do not want to think like the world thinks.

Verse 2 says, "And be not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind." Do not think like the world. They think negatively.

If you want health, you should decide to talk health, and say something along the lines.

"I talk health. I believe in healing. I believe in health. "

Speak words that strengthen you.

Proverbs 18:21 says "Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof."

Proverbs 21:23 "Whosoever keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles."

The words you speak identify you.
The words you speak set the boundaries of your life.

life and death are in the power of the tongue....and this little book packs a wallop. I have given this book to many people who used words casually and thoughtlessly. Not that I have arrived, but this book tells us we will be held accountable for every idle word we speak on the earth because our words have so much impact on the world around us. They are equivelant to gold and we can spend them on good works or evil intent. Blessings to you on your journey of becoming Christ like...love ,k

Essential, but still lacking

It's great to have this book available but it falls somewhat short in being a complete picture of Kawakubo's work. I wish there had been more images from earlier collections and more content on the menswear.

"My fashion pedigree is wholly derived from childhood predilection for wrapping swaths of cloth and ribbon left over from my mother's sewing projects around my body in primitive, avant-gardist arrangements. I would punctuate the look with bright pink plastic heels, the kind that came in a blisterpack from the supermarket, and then hobble over to my mother and ask her with all the gravitas of a four-year-old-girl:

"Mom, am I fashion?"

"Yes sweetie," she'd reply, "You're fashion."

Though not all are subjected to--blessed with?--a congenital penchant for getting dressed, internet culture has given rise to an entire generation of self-styled fashion aficionados who privilege ideas and images over the clothes themselves, and big-idea designers like Rei Kawakubo are their patron saints. I can't pinpoint the moment of discovery, but in a mainstream landscape of bronzed legs, big tits, and beachy waves, Rei Kawakubo and the various arms of her fashion house crept in like a slow revelation; dark, angular creatures from another world moved into the periphery and eventually came to embody my love for clothes that are about clothes."

How is this series so good already? That seemed very fast. But I love it.

Yukari is trying to figure out who is who from his past to his present. He’s slowly getting to know both of them better, which means he’s getting more attached to them as well. We’re getting to know their past selves with him, which also makes him grow more attached to their present selves. He keeps passing out in his present time, leaving Mahoro and Satomi to freak out. Leaving them also to revert to their past selves, feeling unexplained hatred for each other and black-outs.

His going back to the present is starting to affect him in a bad way, though, as is where we end. The cliffhanger is bad, and I really want to have the next one already.

The mystery of what happens has me interested, but I love the romance most. Mahoro is already clearly in like with him, and as Yukari grows closer to her, he starts feeling the attraction as well. Plus there’s their feelings from the past starting to affect him as well. There’s one scene in particular that is just so cute! I love them together already.

I am really loving this series already. The next volume is the last and I cannot wait to get my hands on it.

They set sail in their ship, The Black Hole, following a mysterious fiddle player (are those strings on his arms and legs?) who has a treasure map. Heedless of the subsequent verses of the fiddler's song, which warn of some sort of monster "pirate cruncher," the motley crew also disregards certain other strange happenings and perseveres to their ultimate end. Their fate is told mostly in rollicking but sometimes uneven rhymed text. The striking illustrations in bold colors are digitally rendered with great effect, delineating each individual pirate and slyly hinting at the surprise that's coming—visual clues that every self-respecting pirate lover will delight in pointing out knowledgeably after the first reading. Just when you think there couldn't possibly be space on the shelf for another pirate-related picture book, another comes around that reminds you pirates may well just be one of those inexhaustible mines. A loony old fiddler enchants a pirate crew with a tale of unimaginable treasure on an island far out to sea. The good ship Black Hole sets out with the fiddler aboard, whetting the crew's insatiable appetite for booty, then inflating their fears with warnings of a monster who “likes to eat pirates who come for the treasure, / and chews up their ships just for good measure.” Captain Purplebeard won't have any of it, and even if kids see the truth lurking beneath a final gatefold, it doesn't make the pirate-gobbling monster's splash appearance any less squeal worthy. Duddle's digital artwork has the cartoony physicality of high-tech animated art without the off-putting CGI sheen one might expect. The goony, googly-eyed buccaneers heaped onto each page and the chantey cadences of the text make this a certain winner for jaunty read-alouds. Preschool-Grade 2. --Ian Chipman

Foreshadowning/Moral/Edge of Your Seat for the Smaller Set

Ok! We just shared this - 3, 7, 9 year olds LOVVVED it. Each found something different - Mommy look at the strings on the old pirate. What's that tentacle? That's not a hand! What did the monkey catch. None of them guessed what LURKED below the tranquil island ladden with treaure - not even my 9 year old. I thought we'd never finish for all the sidenotes they were adding. Oh my! Please, please let him have another (equally as good book). If you DON"T buy this or get it from the library (we will never return it--- they want to study it for clues... seriously?, you are nuts... I would definately have LOVED to have this to teach foreshadowing, irony, even a parable of the three warnings. Best kids book in years!!!! Who votes for the Caldecott?

This is one beautiful children's book about pirates! Jonny Duddle entices the reader right from the beginning with the text: "All was unusually quiet in Port Royal...but if you listened carefully, on the docks, down the alleyways, and in the candlelit taverns, you could hear the faint sound of a fiddle floating in the wind." And if that weren't enough, the illustrations are truly amazing, placing the reader right into that darkened scene - one that stirs the imagination and brings foreboding and adventure at the same time. I love the characters - from the Old Fiddler to Pirate Purplebeard of Pendow! And I was ready to sign on as a crewmember and reap my share of the booty - but was glad I didn't in the end. Well done, Jonny Duddle!

The Confidence Code

I would like to see everyone who teaches even one girl, young woman, adult female, etc. read this book. We need, desperately, to change the way women think of themselves. It took nearly 80 years for me to gain the self-confidence that my brothers seem to have inherited along with other genes. We must do better. There is a great deal of evidence to support my contention that our mental capacity is as good as or greater than our male counterparts. Let's do whatever is necessary to keep our females acting this truth. This book is a great beginning! Jo Seier-Doofe

It's not a total waste, but not very helpful

I'm suspicious of some of the five star reviews of this book. If you check out their total reviews, for many this is their only review, and for others, they have just 2 or 3 reviews, all 5 star. And they gush a bit too much about this book. I'm having difficulty getting through this book because it's boring. It's mainly stories about wealthy, highly educated women, or celebrities, who expressed at some point that they felt lucky or unworthy, etc. There are other things in the book, and it is enlightening in some respects. But it's not geared toward helpful advice for the average woman. I agree with the several other reviews for this book that say much the same thing as I am saying. It's not a total waste of money, and if the stats apply to you, you may find it more applicable to yourself.

I did find one thing in the book that I am using, which is that women apologize all the time, whether it's justified or not. I've noticed that I do the same, so am trying to alter this. The response has not been great. The problem is, and perhaps the reason why, women appear to lack confidence and apologize, is because the response when they don't do that is not good. The goal is to get certain things, whether it's a job or a raise or congeniality in the office. I believe that women have learned how to win the end game through experience, and that experience has shown that the best way to do this is to APPEAR more subserviant and pleasant than you are. I saw a documentary once about how girl toddlers & boy toddlers are treated differently, and wondered why girls cry more than boys. You could see in the test that when girl toddlers cried in a child pen area, they got picked up more often than the boys did when they cried. So the girls learned that to cry is to get the result desired, and boys learned that crying did them no good. So the accomplished women in this book, for all their assertions that they attribute their success to luck or whatever, actually did achieve what they wanted, using precisely the things that this book is saying not to use.

Maybe the book changes a bit in the second half. If so, I'll update this review. Don't get me wrong...it's interesting. Just not a practical guide for the average American woman.

Waste of Money.

I read about 40 pages of this book before giving up entirely on it. I was hoping it would give me valuable, intelligent advice for how to overcome moments of self-doubt in the workplace, but instead I found a book riddled with repetitive anecdotes and an often reverse-sexist mentality toward men. The writing is weak and relies heavily on an overt tone of trying-too-hard-to-be-approachable. Most of what I read in the first 40 pages easily could have been communicated in under 5. Frankly I found it insufferable and somewhat insulting to women's intelligence.
