A rare pleasure

That is, to have a general opponent of Marxism in a certain field deal with Marxist views and analysis in such a clear and fair manner. In this case it is Hugh Collins, Fellow of Brasenose College (not particularly known for its radical tendencies) at the time and now a specialist in contract law at the London School of Economics who analyses the possibilities for a Marxist theory of bourgeois law, and he does so with skill and subtlety.

Collins compares various possibilities for a coherent and effective Marxist theory of law, drawing on historical materialism, alienation, class instrumentalism and various other general Marxist 'tools'. This allows him to approach the subject in a manner that becomes increasingly complex and in-depth, as in forming a general theory from these building blocks he is capable of assessing the internal consistency each step of the way. In so doing he rejects the simplistic views of G.A. Cohen and Evgeny Pashukanis, as well as criticizing Lenin and Engels (the latter wrongly attributed) for relying too much on class struggle alone as the determinant factor.

Collins in the end arrives at a comprehensive view that seems to be along the lines of Engels' actual conception of the relation between the legal superstructure and the economic basis, as seen in his letter to Conrad Schmidt (Oct. 27, 1890). Since Collins is surprisingly competent at assessing the value and use of various Marxist terms and tools, he can use the theory of relative autonomy to launch some serious criticisms at the application of Marxism to law in general, which I do not find compelling enough to change my mind but which are certainly worth examining for any radical interested in legal philosophy. It is rare enough to have opponents of Marxist theory make coherent and to-the-point counterarguments, so this deserves a wider reading, to which the reprint should hopefully contribute. It is also helpful for non-specialists that the writing is clear and concise in the best English traditions, and the book is less than 150 pages of actual text.

Highly recommended to serious readers

Few books in circulation deal specifically with Marxism and law, probably because the former assigns the latter a distinctly subordinate role among society's real determinants. In Marxian thinking, law has neither autonomy in practice - being an extention of class interest - nor autonomy in theory - being hopelessly intertwined with nonlegal structures. Bourgeois theorists, on the other hand, treat law as possessing the necessary degree of autonomy that their studies require. Collins hopes to fill the current gap in scholarship created by Marxism' general neglect of legal theory, and succeeds admirably.
Current works are combined with classical ones in highly stimulating fashion that both inform the reader and deepen understanding. Anyone who believes that the `rule of law` is about ensuring that our societal game is played fairly, should read this book. Those of a more skeptical persuasion will also benefit from the skillful treatment Collins, an Oxford Don, brings to the subject. Highly recommended to serious readers.

About the Author
KHANG LE
Khang Le was born in Saigon, Vietnam in 1981. When he was ten, his family moved to Los Angeles, California, and Le immersed himself in the world of comic books. During high school, a friend introduced him to the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. At the same time, The Art of Star Wars, Episode I: The Phantom Menace came out, and making a living as a concept artist for the entertainment industry become Le's aspiration. In 2000, he got accepted to Art Center, where he had the opportunity to refine his skills to freelance for various entertainment mediums, including games, movies, music videos, and publishing. He has recently graduated and is currently traveling the world and considering all of his professional options.

FELIX YOON
Felix Yoon was born in Pennsylvania in 1982, where he spent his childhood, and later relocated to South Korea. He moved to California as he entered high school. It wasn't until senior year when Yoon decided to take art seriously as a possible occupation. After high school he entered Art Center College of Design, where he graduated with honors with a BFA in illustration. He started working as a concept artist for video games and now works as a visual development artist at DreamWorks Animation.

MIKE YAMADA
Michael Yamada was born and raised in Pasadena, California. Originally intending to be a graphic designer, Yamada attended a local community college and changed his course of study after discovering a book of Star Wars production art. He transferred to Art Center College of Design where in 2003 he graduated with honors with a BS degree in product design with a emphasis on entertainment design. He has spent the year after his graduation employed as a visual development artist at DreamWorks Animation, and working on a variety of freelance projects. He also teaches at Otis College of Art and Design.

Inspiration for my senior project

I love this book because
(a) it depicts a fantastic journey of imagination and artistic exploration,
(b) it has a sense of adventure about it,
(c) these young artists show such mind-blowing talent in the pages of this book,
(d) and it inspired me to tackle my own concept art project while I'm still in college.

As I go through my own creative process, I've often found myself referring to this book to see how they tackle the various challenges of designing unique and compelling characters, environments, and props. The commentary they make on each step of the process is just as valuable as their sketches and finished paintings because it gives insight into their mindset as they encountered problems along the way, and how they creatively overcame them. Highly recommended to all students of concept art.

Absolutely Wonderful.

Absolutely gorgeous and wonderful, the book is a fantastic addition to any library. Being a fan of concept art and Grimm tales, I was stoked to get my hands on it, and once I'd seen it in a teacher's collection--I absolutely had to own it myself.

It came quickly and in wonderful condition, and the art inside was just as beautiful as I had remembered! I was more than happy to put it on my bookshelf.

Beautiful, Imaginative, Inspirational

I bought this book originally because it sounded interesting: three artists conceptualizing the same fairytale. What I got was a book FILLED with sketches (which I love, as an artist myself). These three gentlemen walk us through their creative process visually, so you can see how blocking out character shapes turns into detailed character design with color, attitude, and even some humor. I flip through this book regularly (have had it now for two years), and I'll see a headdress here, a sword there, a detail on a gown, and it gives me new ideas for my own characters.

Of the MANY books that claim to be concept art, The Skillful Huntsman is, by far, the best I've found. Love love love.

Pretty darn good!

When the Imperial prison barge Purge suffers thruster failure out in the boondocks, they appear to be in a lot of trouble. Hope presents itself in the form of an Imperial Star Destroyer that is nearby, apparently abandoned. And so, a team of engineers from the prison barge goes over to see if they can collect enough spare parts to repair their own ship. But, what the engineers find on the Star Destroyer is horror beyond their darkest nightmares!

OK, I must admit that I am often intrigued by crossover books - in this case one combining Star Wars and the popular zombie motif. Like all books, crossovers range from the ridiculous to the sublime, with the vast majority of them falling somewhere in between. As for myself, I found this book to be pretty darn good.

I thought that the author did a good job of combining Star Wars and zombies. I found the story to be reasonably written (the story has to be reasonable if it's going to be in Science Fiction), and yet nicely scary. Who was going to live and who was going to die? The author kept you guessing right up to the end of the book. Right, I really enjoyed this book, and don't hesitate to recommend it.

Not bad but could have been better.

Death Troopers holds much promise at the outset. Zombies in Star Wars. Need I say more? And there are zombies. My main problem is it takes so long to see them. There are 234 pgs in the novel but the Zombies only appear on page 133. I don't know about you but I want to see zombies no more than 60 pgs in (1/4), not halfway.

I was also unsatisfied with the ending. Still and all it held my attention. It was also cool to see Han and Chewbacca. Both are well written and act the way you'd expect them too, especially pre-carbonite Han.

How cool would it have been to have Boba Fett instead of Han and Chewie?

Fett - "You paid me to bring the prisoners in alive, now you want me to kill them?"
Vader - "It shouldn't be too difficult, they're already dead."
Fett - "I'm chargin you double!"
Vader - "As you wish."

Worth the read.

About the Author
Wendy Cope was born in Erith, Kent. After university she worked for fifteen years as a primary-school teacher in London. Her first collection of poems, Making Cocoa for Kingsley Amis, was published in 1986. In 1987 she received a Cholmondeley Award for poetry and in 1995 the American Academy of Arts and Letters Michael Braude Award for light verse. Two Cures for Love: Selected Poems 1979-2006 was published in 2008.

Coping well in Kindle

I am a huge fan of Wendy Cope. I enjoy her wit and her humour, and her authentic humanity that shines through her work. She was one of the first few writers whose work made me feel like it was okay that I was a complex creature with a sharp tongue and more than a few rough edges, and that having a few flaws was a part of the fun and joy of being alive. She's not all flippant sarcasm, she's also surprisingly deep and sincere. I can't recommend her work enough!

All of that said, I was a bit nervous about buying a Kindle version of one of her books, wondering whether I'd manage to enjoy on-screen reading as much as I enjoy curling up in afternoon sunlight with the paper and ink real deal. But it worked out okay for us, we were contented, never nonplussed.

Keep saying this and don't forget / The party isn't over yet

More than any poet since Betjeman, Wendy Cope has the rare gift of being funny and serious - often in the same poem. That is crucial. Beneath the jaunty villanelles, the comic repetitions and the triple-metre, some hard truths about life and love are being smuggled in. One favourite is the poem 'April'. I quote it here in full:

'The birds are singing loudly overhead
As if to celebrate the April weather.
I want to stay in this lovely world forever
And be with you, my love, and share your bed.

I don't believe I'll see you when we're dead.
I don't believe we'll meet and be together.
The birds are singing loudly overhead.
I want to stay in this lovely world forever.'

Like Auden's 'Lullaby', the poem gains its power and maturity from cherishing what it knows is only temporary.

Two other poems, 'Health Scare' and 'Keep Saying This', are franker confrontations with illness and death, and rhyme and repetition become charms, invoked to keep despair at bay ('It helps to say their names and make them rhyme'). You can't help being reminded that 'Ring-a-ring-of-roses' was written about the Black Death.

Accepting futility, though, doesn't mean going down without a fight. Cope's sharp (but never withering) sense of humour can deliver wicked, one-two combinations to the head, as in 'Special Needs', 'Unbearable', 'Football', and 'Differences of Opinion':

'He tells her the earth is flat -
He knows the facts, and that is that.
In altercations, fierce and long
She tries her to best to prove him wrong.
But he has learned to argue well.
He calls her arguments unsound
And often asks her not to yell.
She cannot win. He stands his ground.

The planet goes on being round.'

Cope's quality control system is a sound as ever. Her collections may be few, but they're always worth waiting for. A worthy addition to the Cope canon, and a treat for readers everywhere.

A changing of the guard amongst key influencers

And whether you were trying to secure an advertising buy or editorial space you also had to deal with "gatekeepers" - those are the editors, producers and sales managers within the media. However, with the continuing rise of the Internet and its democratization of the communication chain - that old-media model is shrinking and eroding daily. Technology and business expert Ben McConnell looks at the juggernaut-like influence and power that has shifted from the old "gatekeepers" to a new class. This new breed of influence peddlers is what McConnell calls Citizen Marketers and it's the title of his book. He defines these individuals as a small group of young, computer savvy hipsters that align their Internet gravitas with any idea, product or brand that happens to fit their particular worldview that day. McConnell stresses that these individuals are influencers in the truest sense since that can quickly mobilize and lead others to action. Hitting the Nail on the Head

In typical fashion, Jackie and Ben have written a clear and thoughtful book that's easy to understand and easy to get through. Well worth taking the time to read.

To get their points across, they use a number of well-known examples of "citizens" communicating through online channels, but don't just scratch the surface - they've clearly put on their reporting hats, replacing just web anecdotes for real interviews.

The book falls into the trap of having to "put a name" to the scenarios they see. Concepts like "firecrackers" may help the novice understand a certain type of consumer, but experts won't see the value in another pile of terminology thrown into the marketing void.

Jackie and Ben are purists - and limit themselves to only seeing organic behavior as having value, rather than helping companies understand how they can accelerate and augment what's happening the market. Either way, they are at their finest here and have produced a manifesto that's worth buying for all of your clients.
