Top-Tier Graphic Novel

Midnight Nation (inexplicably labeled as Vol. 1, as I don't think there was ever any intention of continuing the story) is an outstanding graphic novel. The art is very good throughout with some memorable images that support the story. But this is really Straczynski's show. As a die-never fan of Babylon 5, I'm happy to follow JMS wherever he'll take me. Though he can at times be a bit wordier than need be—and there's a certain plot point that recalls Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, as well as an aspect of B5—I love his rhythms, sense of humor, and, most of all, his ability to evoke real emotion.

The premise requires a bit of acceptance on the reader's part, but if you give yourself over to some of the far-fetched aspects (even for sci-fi), the reward in the conclusion is well worth it. I didn't think I had connected with the characters to any large degree as the story progressed, but the payoff at the end revealed that these characters really do have an unexpected depth.

The only thing I wish they'd done differently in assembling this collection was if they'd presented the cover images for each issue/chapter in their original location, rather than gathering them at the back of the book. On the one hand, I see why they wanted to keep the story flowing as one continuous story. On the other hand, it felt like reading a novel with the chapter titles deleted. A brief pause to admire the cover art at each break would have been a little better. Nevertheless, this is a great story, well told, with adult themes, intelligence, and wit. It's a great use of the graphic novel format, and I highly recommend it for fans of the genre.

Wow! What an excellently written story.

I was surfing the internet and came across a site that mentioned Midnight Nation as one of the best graphic novels ever written. I came to Amazon and read strong recommendations from other reviewers. I ordered Midnight Nation. I finished it quickly in one sitting.

The story is immediately relatable (one can immediately relate to the story?) and the artwork was impressive in a non-distracting way. It is thought provoking, and the main character is, I feel, an excellent place holder for the reader, allowing the themes in the story to become more important and relevant on a personal level.

Even though I'm very late to the game in regards to how long Midnight Nation has been available, I'll confidently say any time is a good time to pick these volumes up and give them a read.

If I had a complaint, and this is more of an observation, it would be that often times I felt that the story moved along in a jarring manner. This might be intentional, or I could have been reading through it so rapidly that I made it feel that way, but that did stand out to me.

A read to be desired.

It's really not uncommon for me to read an entire graphic novel in one sitting, or two or three. But largely that's due to the fact that there is a space of time that needs to be filled. I don't apply the same thinking to Midnight Nation; I didn't read this in one sitting because I had the time to, I did it because the book actually creates a desire to be read. I know, books don't create things, but one can certainly be inspired by something they read. So I'll say I was inspired to finish it.

It's honestly really hard to write about something so great without wanting to spill all the contents of its pages onto the screen. That's how good with it, I want to share it. When I was done reading it, I didn't really feel like I was OK with it being over... At all. Other customer reviews gave me an impression that this was going to be something I wanted, all wrapped up in one pretty package. I'll just try to keep the context simple.

If you like dense storylines that do not leave you with asking more questions than the ones answered, this is for you. If you have a soft spot for human compassion, and seeing the benefits of enforcing hope, this is for you. If you like to see protagonists overcome extreme adversity, not just externally but internally as well, this is for you. If you like it when your antagonist actually is someone that knows what they are talking about and makes you question the morals, methods, and ethics of the world around you, this is for you. If you like it when character stories aren't stagnant with literary decay, this is for you. If you like philosophical premises with a bit more than a tinge of religious context that isn't offensive, this is for you.

To sum it all up though. Straczynki has unveiled a marvel in this book, and has bought my attention from this day forward. This book is not for those that are interested only in the stereotypical protagonist that lives the simple life of putting the bad guy in jail, bad guy breaks out of jail, good guy puts bad guy back in jail, and then ponders over the implications of what has happened.

This book is thoroughly amazing, and I'm glad it's gotten the great ratings it deserves.

David Galula was a French Army officer who graduated from St. Cyr Military Academy in 1939. A veteran of the North African Campaign and the liberation of Italy and France during World War II, he later went on to serve in China, Greece, Indo-China, and Algeria. He wrote Counterinsurgency Warfare as an International Fellow at Harvard University. Lieutenant Colonel Galula died in 1967.

Relevant for Today and a Must-Read for Military Leaders

David Galula's Counterinsurgency Warfare: Theory and Practice is as relevant today as it was when it was originally published decades ago. This is the book that every general should read. To put it more succinctly, if you are a general serving in the American armed forces today and have not read this book, then you are wrong. Galula's careful study of past revolutionary warfare is prophetic of today's conflicts across the globe especially the War in Iraq.

As part of a recent series of republished books on the subject of insurgencies, Galula's provides the important foundation from which to branch into more specific areas of conflict. I wish we had book at West Point when I was a cadet, and I recommend it to the Department of History and the Department of Military Science without reservation.

Drawing upon decades of experience participating in counter-revolutionary warfare and studying it across the globe, Galula's analysis is tempered with a strong dose of reality. I had difficulty sometimes thinking he was writing about today's wars when talking so eloquently about previous insurgencies that parallel today's realities. Galula's references are outstanding, his analysis is thorough, and his conclusions valid.

The Heart of the New Army/Marine Corps Counterinsurgency Manual
By John Nagl
David Galula's account of the lessons he learned fighting in Algeria is the single best book on counterinsurgency. It heavily influenced the writing of Army/Marine Corps Field Manual 3-24, Counterinsurgency; especially important were Galula's lessons about the primacy of political over military elements of power in a COIN campaign and the incredible importance of information operations. "Counteirnsurgency Warfare: Theory and Practice" should be heavily highlighted and reside on the bookshelf of every counterinsurgent.

This book is a classic counterinsurgency text, and is often quoted in many other works. Although it is primarily concerned with insurgencies from the early Cold War (it was written in the early sixties), the ideas discussed do have currency today. I don't know if the authors of the strategy of the surge during the Iraq war had actually read the book, but you can see that they had many of the same views. The only limitation on my rating stems from the fact that, due to the age of the work, it does not draw from the experience of more recent insurgencies.

Military Must Read

This is a concise history of US military action and its impact on our soldiers, our citizens, the world. It details with quotes those who have been involved in making war a profitable business for military producers and politicians who pave the way for them.

I wish every soldier sailor marine and airman would read this book and understand what is happening. I love the men and women who are brave enough to defend our country, but they need to understand that it is not our freedom that is at stake, but the profits of greedy corporations.

About the Author

Dr. Qizhang Liu has been Senior Lecturer, Department of Decision Science, National University of Singapore, since July 2011. Before that he was Senior Lecturer, Department of Mathematics and Science, Singapore Polytechnic and Adjunct Associate Professor, Department of Decision Science, National University of Singapore. Dr. Liu has a great deal of industry experience working in a consulting capacity for SMRT Corporation, Ministry of Defense, and several airlines. He has published journal articles in many prestigious journals, and he holds a PhD in Mathematics at National University of Singapore.

Dr. Mark Goh is an Associate Professor, Department of Decision Science, National University of Singapore and is Director (Industry Research) at The Logistics Institute Asia-Pacific. In 2007 he was listed in Who's Who in Supply Chain Asia. He has had several positions within Editorial Boards of prestigious operations management and decision sciences journals, including Journal of Operational Research, Logistics Information Management, European Journal of Purchasing and Supply Management. He is the Asia-Pacific Regional Editor for Supply Chain Management: An International Journal. He has been awarded numerous research grants and has published more than 200 journal papers, book chapters, book reviews, and other document types. He holds a PhD from the University of Adelaide, Australia.
