About the Author
Jason A. Colquitt is the William H. Willson Distinguished Chair in the Department of Management at the University of Georgia's Terry College of Business. He received his PhD from Michigan State University's Eli Broad Graduate School of Management, and earned his BS in Psychology from Indiana University. He has taught organizational behavior and human resource management at the undergraduate, masters, and executive levels and has also taught research methods at the doctoral level. He has received awards for teaching excellence at both the undergraduate and executive levels.

Jeffery A. LePine is the PetSmart Chair in Leadership in the Department of Management at Arizona State University’s W.P. Carey School of Business. He received his PhD in Organizational Behavior from the Eli Broad Graduate School of Management at Michigan State University. He also earned an MS in Management from Florida State University and a BS in Finance from the University of Connecticut. He has taught organizational behavior, human resource management, and management of groups and teams at undergraduate and graduate levels.

Michael J. Wesson is an associate professor in the management department at Texas A&M University's Mays Business School. He received his PhD from Michigan State University's Eli Broad Graduate School of Management. He also holds an MS in human resource management from Texas A&M University and a BBA from Baylor University. He has taught organizational behaviour and human resource management–based classes at all levels but currently spends most of his time teaching Mays MBAs, EMBAs, and executive development at Texas A&M.

Michael's research interests include organizational justice, goal-setting, organizational entry (employee recruitment, selection, and socialization), person–organization fit, and compensation and benefits.

Solid and entertaining text with some sacrifices in content

This is easily the most engaging OB textbook on the market, with clear writing and lots of production value in terms of quotes, sidebar tangents, connections to books and media, diagrams, etc. It is also noteworthy because the authors structured the chapters into an overarching model that is repeatedly reinforced, which helps prevent the chapters from feeling like a series of disjointed ideas, a common problem in OB courses.

My only criticism is that several topics that are common to most other OB books are oddly absent, or glossed over, in this textbook. There is little content on the theory of the organization or the history of OB, careers, work identity, emotions (which are just wrapped up in the book's coverage of satisfaction), diversity, or organizational change/development. These topics may not have fit in the book's overarching model, but instructors who want to talk about these topics, like I do, will need to find supplmental readings.

Decently written textbook - no index, though

The textbook is straightforward and, if you've had any sort of organizational behavior course, you won't have any surprises. The chapters give real-world examples of various topics and at the end of the chapter, there is a synopsis of the topics covered.

The biggest flaw in the book is that there is only a glossary/definition of terms section. Although these tell you the page where the definition was originally given, there are a limited number of words. Without a true index, I can't find, directly, which chapters discuss a specific item.

I'm also not a huge fan of loose-leaf textbooks, especially when they cost upwards of $100, but I need this for an MBA course and the alternative is a digital copy, which I loathe more.

Good read - if in college get the older edition

good book that teaches you to be organized in the business sense. BTW if a professor is REQUIRING you to have the most recent edition don't do it buy the older one. I retook this class and still had my older edition and i bought the newer one. . . the ONLY difference is a little real life story on each of the chapter pages (like a paragraph or 2 long) and pictures are laid out differently. Other than that its the same.

A great, complex read

Starting Point: 1979-1996 is an amazing book. It's a heavy read, with essays covering everything from Miyazaki's works, to philosophy and religion, Japanese economy and the life of an animator and so much more. I found it a contradictory, frustrating and often pessimistic read but also to be incredibly fascinating and honest. It adds a whole new dimension to the man we know in Miyazaki. He's a genius as an animator but it seems he must be a terribly unfulfilled person in real life (he missed much of his children's lives due to his workaholic attitude). The book could do with some more pictures and maybe more information on his Nausicaa manga but otherwise it's a brilliant, if not always a happy read. I hope Viz Media release the sequel - Turning Point: 1997-2008, sometime in the near future. Highly recommended for Miyazaki fans. 5/5

A Must-Read For All Miyazaki Fans

I bought Starting Point at the beginning of this year as material for a research paper I was writing on three of Hayao Miyazaki's films. Since then, I have read the entire thing and reread multiple portions of this extraordinary book. It became an invaluable resource for me as I wrote my paper, but it was also a very enjoyable and personal book. Over the course of the weeks it took me to finish it, I felt like I actually got to know Hayao Miyazaki. As I told several people, Starting Point is definitely the best book I have purchased in a very long time, and so far it is the best thing I have read this year. With all the wonderful essays, interviews, directorial memos, and even drawings it contains, I'm surprised there hasn't been more hype about it. It is an absolute must-read for any Miyazaki fan. I can't believe we had to wait more than fifteen years for this book to be translated and published in the United States (it was first published in Japan in 1996).

The book, which is nearly 500 pages long, has been divided into several parts and includes a foreword by John Lasseter (director of Toy Story) and an afterword by Isao Takahata (director of Grave of the Fireflies). The first part, entitled "On Creating Animation" is perhaps the most technical part of the book. Even though many of Miyazaki's thoughts on animation and film techniques were a bit over my head, I still enjoyed reading those chapters and thinking about them. Miyazaki's writing style is simple enough that I didn't feel swept away by too much jargon or overly-technical terms. For filmmakers and those interested in how animation works, this part of the book will be fascinating. The second part, called "On The Periphery of the Work" was similar to the previous section in that it contained chapters about animation techniques. However, Miyazaki mainly writes about his thoughts on various animated films. He also includes some very short essays like "The Tokyo I Love" that almost feel like journal entries. Part three, "People", is full of essays about individuals who have helped, inspired, and even irritated Miyazaki. Two of my favorites are "I Left Raising Our Children To My Wife" and "My Old Man's Back." These are both very vulnerable essays about some of the people closest to Miyazaki, and reading them almost brought tears to my eyes.

"A Story in Color" and part of "My Favorite Things" give the reader a short break from the text with a comic and some illustrations. "Dining in Midair" is a charming and sometimes amusing comic about the history of in-flight dining. Scrapbooks No. 1 - 3 in the beginning of "My Favorite Things" display some pictures of flying machines, tanks, and cars, and also a very short illustrated story called "I Want A Garden Like This." Then we are back to more essays for the remaining part of "Favorite Things." My favorite essay in this section is "My Random Thoughts Notebook Is My Hobby." This one made me laugh because I expected it to be an essay about Miyazaki's random thoughts notebook. However, it was simply a piece full of disjointed thoughts, memories, and observations.

"Planning Notes; Directorial Memoranda" was a nice inclusion and the directorial memos were fun to read. For those who want more details about some of their favorite Miyazaki films like Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Porco Rosso, and Princess Mononoke, this section is for them. Although the memos are fairly short, I found them fascinating and enjoyable. However, for those who really want depth and insight into their favorite films, "Works" is the part to flip to. This section has a lot of information on Miyazaki's earlier works, like Lupin III, Future Boy Conan, and Panda! Go Panda! I had not heard of any of these before reading the book, but reading the chapter on Lupin was what convinced me to watch the film Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro, which was excellent. "Works" also has quite a few extensive chapters on Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, My Neighbor Totoro, and Castle in the Sky. Miyazaki focuses on Nausicaä especially in several chapters, one of my favorites being an interview titled "Nature Is Both Generous and Ferocious."

All in all, this book was excellent and I am very pleased to have it in my library. I have heard rumors that Viz Media might be publishing Miyazaki's later book Turning Point: 1997 - 2008 soon, and I hope that is the case. Much as I enjoyed this book, I would love to read more about Miyazaki's later works like Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Ponyo. In the meantime, I plan to read this book over and over again, and I encourage anyone interested in Miyazaki's works (or even just interested in film and animation) to pick up a copy.

The vision of a genius

Hayao Miyazaki is considered one of the best directors of animation history.

Covering the sursprisingly amount of 500 pages, Starting Point (in a beatiful edition by Viz Media) icludes not only all the essays and commentaries written by Miyazaki between 1979 and 1996, but also integrates a lot of skecthes, cartoons and rare drawings of the famous director. Not only that, but the biggest catch of the book is discovering that Miyazaki, as what it is (a genius), it's also a complex individual and a likeable writer. His opinions included in this book, cover a wide variety of topics: the history of Japan, animation principles, evolution of the anime industry, his personal life, opinions of society, ecology, war and even life.

Starting Point is a provoking and complex read. The opinions of Miyazaki may come as overly extreme or controversial, but in his broad vision of the world is clear that he makes his animated movies with passion and care for the children (which are his intended audience). Viz Media deserves a price for this hardcover edition, the design and quality is top-notch and includes a brief, but insightful introduction by John Lasseter and an Afterword, by the also amazing director, Isao Takahata -from Grave of the Fireflies fame-.

A recommended read by fans of anime, animation or Studio Ghibli and a must-buy by animation students.

Colorful Guide to Fast Movers!

Jim Winchester and Thunder Bay Press offer up this hefty, coffee-table tribute to classic jet fighters, interceptors and the occasional attack aircraft. Nowhere definitive, it should nevertheless appeal to air warfare buffs.

Winchester provides brief but comprehensive histories of 50 jets ranging from the Me 262 to the F-35 along with brief tech specs, several b&w and/or color photographs, color profiles and artwork. Last but not least, full cutaway drawings are included for all but the most recent jets, hence the FIGHTER JETS INSIDE OUT title. Each aircraft gets a six-page write-up.

In terms of coverage, the 'usual suspects' can be found in either the Classic Jets, 1945-60 section or under Modern Jets, 1960-Present. They include the P-80, Meteor, F9F, F-86, MiG-15, F-100, A-4, F-101, MiG-21, Draken, various Mirage models, Su-15, Viggen, F-14, Sea Harrier, MiG-19, Su-27, F-16, Rafale, F-22, etc.

Winchester and Thunder Bay Press have previously produced similar volumes under their AVIATION FACTFILE series but in the 11 1/2" by 8 1/2" format. In some respects, JET FIGHTERS INSIDE OUT seems to be an Aviation Factfile on steroids. Indeed some of the material, photographs and artwork can be found in those AF titles.

Having said that, JET FIGHTERS INSIDE OUT is a nicely-illustrated, basic guide to some impressive fast movers of the past 65 years. Recommended.

*SPOILER-ALERT*-- Really, only a spoiler alert for my thirty-two year-old son. I hope you have no time to check out this review just like my other reviews due to your busy schedule, because this is a XMAS gift for you.

If you yourself enjoy seeing, reading, studying jet aircraft, or have a loved one that does... this is the book for you. I'm an honorably discharged Viet Nam Era Veteran and when I served I was on the ground and the jets were overhead. My full grown son has an Uncle who flew during Viet Nam and that among other reasons is why he has always had a fascination with jets.

I researched a number of books dedicated to jets and this one looked like the best bet... and I was on pins and needles awaiting its delivery... hoping it was as good as it sounded. Wow! What a beautifully put together treasure. This should be quite a conversation piece for years to come as a coffee-table-book proudly displayed. The quality of the construction is superb. It is approximately 12 ½" X 9 ¼" and almost 1 ½" thick. (And it weighs close to FIVE POUNDS.) It has a beautiful colorful book jacket and each individual page is thick and glossy. The pictures are exquisite and the drawings are akin to an architect's blueprint and are eye-catching.

The jets are listed chronologically from 1942 to the present. Even a novice such as myself will get caught up in the excitement just by randomly looking through the pages and stopping and checking key statistics that range from dimensions to weights to fuel to PERFORMANCE (THAT'S SPEED BABY!) and armament. When you see speeds listed past 1,000 MPH it's hard not to sigh and want to discuss it with someone. From beautiful external pictures of these man-made-lethal beasts to pictures of innumerable cockpits that epitomizes the evolution of the actual "guts" of these soaring testimonials to military precision.

This highly-highly recommended book embodies the adage of "it is better to give than receive"... as I can't wait to see my son's reaction when he opens this gift! I will share the experience with you in a month or so.

No-brainer

This one is easy. The book is factually correct and fun to read. I'm ex-air force and this book was just a joy to read. There is no person who is mechanically-minded that wouldn't enjoy this reading. To see the different planes compared and beautifully illustrated is amazing. Even the French and Russian planes are well explained and helped me appreciate their design. And the material of the book itself was excellent. Every guy that visits my house will grab this one. The down side? I've got to buy some for my friends.

GO AHEAD, BINGE.

I’m not saying go out and snort a bunch of cocaine or do anything that’s going to seriously put you or the people around you in danger, obviously.

Binge on the things that bring fulfillment and happiness and satisfaction and make you feel alive. Binge on people who fascinate you and love that wakes you up from monotony. Binge on exploring, both your hometown and the farthest continent. Binge on the time you spend bettering yourself and petting dogs. Binge on picking your grandma’s brain and learning the story of the time she got catfished. Binge on giving, in all senses. Binge on indulging.

We’re told every day from an early age that moderation is key. Count your calories, wait a while before you tell someone you love them, and remember that balance is the path to happiness. While all of those are great in theory, does a lesson taught from someone else’s mistakes resonate just as deeply as the ones you learn yourself? When you binge, you find your own boundaries.

Even if I spend every waking moment attempting to keep my life in balance, I’m going to fuck up. Having already fucked up quite a few times in my life, and having lived to tell the tale, I don’t regret any of it.

I’ve binged plenty of times in my life, sometimes for better, sometimes for worse. Regardless, I indulged. This collection is the result.

the one we've all come to know and love through his videos and his podcasts

As a casual fan of Tyler, I bought this book to support him and to get the inside scope on all the juicy secrets he didn't reveal in his videos. Despite that, I wasn't expecting a lot.

What a refreshing surprise. What I expected to be a book that would slightly elaborate on stories from his videos ended up becoming an engaging, humorous, and emotional rollercoaster. He delves into subjects many people would never touch with a ten foot pole, and he is relentless in his execution. His voice, the one we've all come to know and love through his videos and his podcasts, is embedded within these words in a way that is so natural and strong that you're sucked into the world of "Tyler Oakley" with each sentence you read. Binge gives us the embarrassing relationship stuff, the hilarious of-course-he-would stories, the heartbreaking times, and the simple but resounding life lessons.

Thanks to this, I've set aside my skepticism because as Tyler continuously emphasizes in Binge, in the end, his goal isn't anything else but to be himself. And while this book won't be required reading for AP English Literature anytime soon, it is the epitome of Tyler's presence, and that in itself makes for a fantastic story.

I am so proud of him.

I’ve just read the final sentence of my signed copy of Binge, and put down said book for the first time since picking it up. What better time to write a book review than seconds after finishing the book, with tear-tracks still noticeable on your face and a distinct aching in your heart?

Tyler Oakley is someone who means a lot to me, as his shared video experiences have helped me vastly throughout the (roughly) three years I have been watching his content. Thanks to the wonderful online community that he has helped to create, I have made at least four of my closest friends, three of whom I have met in real life, all thanks to him.

Consequently, it was without question that I ordered Binge. I’m not sure exactly what I was expecting, but I know that it wasn’t this. Never before have I felt so close to him, as though I’ve seen hours of his life on my computer screen -and even had the opportunity to hug him at his London Slumber Party tour stop-, he has truly never shared such intimately personal details of his life with me or any subscriber.

It was a worry of mine that I wouldn’t feel the same connection with Tyler that I usually do whilst reading this book. Thankfully, this was far from the case. Throughout, it felt as if he was speaking to me still, as near as he has always been with videos, closer, even. His unique way of phrasing his sentences, creating inside jokes -perhaps unknowingly- and just talking to us like equals has been built upon and yet stayed true to itself throughout Binge. Not a shred of his distinctive personality has been lost, although it has definitely shone through stronger than ever before.

Now, as always, I am truly proud to call myself one of his people. I love Tyler with all of my heart.

so I thought it would be a good idea to preview the book before he read it ...

I took my 12yo son to see Tyler at his book signing. He's not a HUGE fan, but knows him primarily from some collab videos with other YouTubers. I haven't watched a lot of his stuff myself, so I thought it would be a good idea to preview the book before he read it and I'm glad I did because I was not comfortable having him read the whole thing. We are not a prudish family by any means at all, and I know he could go out there and find all of this info online, but I'm just not quite ready to *personally* hand him a book that teaches him how to use Grindr, have anonymous sex and talks about "getting dick".

That said, I enjoyed the book. I am compromising with my kiddo and letting him read some selected chapters. I feel a little weird doing that because it's not typically my style, but I think there are some valuable lessons and funny stories in the book that he will enjoy. He can read the rest when he cares enough to go snooping for it (I'm not stupid). ;)

The Truth Sets Us Free

The truth sets us free, indeed! Freedom is so important, yet many don't realize that they are enslaved by the very things that are supposed to give them hope and security. I hope that this book can open people's eyes and their minds.
I also like the way Luciferian philosophy is explained so simply. Everyone should read this book, regardless of your religion!
