Bob Sawvelle, DMin, is the senior pastor of Passion Church (www.passiontucson.org) in Tucson, Arizona. His doctoral dissertation delved deeply into Christian healing research. A Case for Healing Today was written to share his findings with other Christians—and anyone who questions the healing power of faith. His ministry is affiliated with Dr. Randy Clark and the Apostolic Network of Global Awakening. Bob’s ministry and church witness as routine God’s healing power with those they pray for. He desires to help Christians grow in knowledge and faith in this important area of ministry, and bring nonbelievers to Christ through encountering God’s love and healing power through ordinary believers walking in Christ’s authority. Sawvelle is married and has three adult children.

May we have more power as we chew on this truth

I've read lot of books on healing, but this one is unique. I find myself highlighting and meditating on just about every other page. It is strengthening my faith for healing, because it is based on the Bible itself and well as centuries of historical proof. I appreciate the background knowledge of Bob and his extensive research. Yet it is easy to read and compelling. Believe it or not, I find myself meditating on the footnotes as well! As we pray for a new spiritual awakening to overtake America, this is a good help.

Makes An Extremely Strong Case

If you don't believe God still heals, then don't pray for healing. However, I would humbly submit that if you don't think God still heals, then it really does not make much theological sense to pray that God "guides the doctor's hands." Why would guide care about guiding the doctor's hands if He doesn't care about healing?
Also. if you don't like my review, then feel free to write your own, but I have no desire to debate this topic. So, please don't post snarky comments. Let me also say that I don't have, or function in, the gift of healing, nor am I directly connected to a ministry or church that does, so I do not have a dog in this fight so to speak. I simply want to look to the scriptures - not some contrived doctrine - and see what the bible says about divine healing. I have read many books on this topic over the years. More than I can remember.
This book is straightforward, cleanly structured, and well put together. It is one of the better recent works on the subject.
Unlike many other works on this issue, it largely avoids editorial commentary, and just follows the evidence where it leads. Also unlike most other books on this topic, the author does not cast aspersions on those who may disagree with his conclusions.
The book pulls in quotes from many distinguished theologians to bolster his case. It is clear that to some degree, cessationist theology - the belief that the so-called sign gifts, of which healing is one - emerged (at least in part) because the church wanted to seem more acceptable and palatable to secular western intellectualism, as well as the growing intellectualism within Christianity itself.
If you can get past a fairly boring and largely irrelevant first segment of the book, where the author talks about all the places he has visited and things he has done, the book makes a very powerful historical and theological case for divine healing being available to Christians today.
I also like that the church the author is associated with has a web page where you can view testimonials of healings. This is really significant, because most books of this nature make grandiose claims of miraculous healings, with absolutely no real evidence to support those stories.
In the interest of full disclosure, I do understand where people are coming from when they think the gift of healing is no longer available to believers today. Most have been taught by teachers they greatly respect that the gift is no longer given, and they have also seen countless people - often good, decent, authentic Christians - pray for healing and not receive it. Admittedly, those two factors alone are massive hurdles to overcome when examining this subject.
The basic argument has been that the so-called "sign gifts" - such as healing - were only temporary manifestations designed to authenticate the gospel, and died out with the apostles, or when the bible was completed. When you think it through, this theory makes absolutely no logical - let alone biblical - sense, and does not have a shred of indisputable scriptural evidence to back it up. Yet, many prestigious churches and highly educated pastors still hold dearly to it, and have gone to great lengths to cobble together a convoluted theology and revisionist church history to allegedly support it.
I do not know why God heals some people and some illnesses and not others. Only God knows. Even most die-hard dispensationalists will admit that God still occasionally heals, however rarely it may be. They just don''t see that as in any way indicating God still heals on a common, everyday basis.
However, I do think the evidence shows that if you use the same rules of biblical interpretation to evaluate the verses on healing that you use to evaluate the rest of scripture, you pretty much reach the inescapable conclusion that divine healing is still available today. That is not to say that fools and phonies are not out there, or that there is not some really sketchy, over the top theology circulating regarding this subject. But God still heals...when and who He so chooses.
Whether the healings we see today "look" just like the healings Jesus and the apostles did (or not) really isn't the salient question. This is one of the criticisms cessationists often trot out: "Well, the healings we see today can't be real, because they are nothing like what Jesus did." But that is an argument against healing derived from experience, not scripture, which ironically is exactly what cessationists accuse charismatics of constantly doing.
I say again that without a doubt, there have been excesses and bizarre behavior within some wings of the divine healing "movement". I think just about everyone on both sides of this issue would concede that point. However, the core question remains: Does the bible say - or even strongly imply - that divine healing ended after the first century, or when we got the bible, and therefore is no longer available to Christians today? No, it does not. And that is the theological bottom line.

A person with experience is never at the mercy of the person with only knowledge

I really enjoyed reading Bob Sawvelle's book.
He mentions in his book that he and others from his church have been on 12 mission's trips with Global Awakening around the world. My wife, Lynn, and I have been on 3 of these trips with Bob and others from his church. These trips were life changing trips for Lynn and myself. We now fully embrace the facts that our God is altogether good and does not send sickness or evil spirits to anyone, but only saves, heals and delivers all of us from the evil that still exists in this world. We have now witnessed far too many miracles of healing and deliverance in the United States, Brazil and India to, in any way, doubt or deny what we have experienced.
Bob Sawvelle's scholarly work presenting his case from scripture and church history from the time of Christ to the present moment makes a great case for healing and deliverance.
This book clearly shows the course of the Christian Church after deviating from practicing healing and deliverance. Bob's book carefully notes the remnant of the church that stayed the course of the first Century example through the different periods of the church. It should be helpful to answer the questions that have arisen during those periods that cessationist doctrines have been adopted for segments of the church that exist to this day. The consequences of church leaders teaching these doctrines have all but stopped church growth for those segments of the church.
Bob's book chronicles the unparalleled growth for the past 100 plus years of the Pentecostal and Charismatic movements throughout the world as they adopted the early teachings of the early church. At this time, of 2 billion Christian believers worldwide, about 2/3 of them call themselves Pentecostal or Charismatic believers and fully embrace and attest to miracles of healing and deliverance.
Early in the book, Bob recounts a story about a young woman with a severe case of schizophrenia that was healed and delivered in a Healing School in Tuscon, AZ. My wife and I were both present in this meeting and actually met this young woman after her healing. She is just one account of great many that Bob could have presented. He choose instead to make his case as much from scriptural basis and church history as possible in his book. Maybe Bob Sawvelle will write a followup book full of actual case histories of people in our time who have actually received healing and deliverance.
All that said, it is very easy to fully recommend this book. Bob Sawvelle has presented his case well.
