The increased role and development of admixtures in concrete technology is evidenced by a number of conferences, publications, and novel admixtures available in the market place.

These developments in the field caused the modification of many chapters in the first edition in order to reflect the advances. Although individual chapters refer to standards and specifications of admixtures, those only interested in the standards or techniques used in investigating admixtures will find the second chapter (Research Technologies, Standards, and Specifications) useful. Admixtures are not as inert as may be presumed. They may chemically interact with the constituents of concrete and affect the properties of the fresh and hardened concrete and its durability. Each chapter contains a list of important recent references that should be a useful guide for further reading.
A chapter on "Cement Science" was included to describe the most recent concepts so that the information presented in subsequent chapters could easily be followed.
The last chapter on "Patents" describes how a variety of materials (natural, synthesized or waste) can be utilized as admixtures for various purposes.

Perspectives Emerging

It may come as a surprise to many who first encounter this book that the science of ecology might have anything to contribute to philosophy in general -- this, despite the fact that popular notions of ecology are in the forefront of the search for new directions, be they in the guise of the "Deep Ecology" of Arne Naess, or the "Web of Life" advanced by Frijthof Capra. But scientific perspectives unique to ecology are arising, and making connections between ecological outlooks and how nature generally is perceived is the primary goal of this book -- as stated in its subtitle.
No dominant ecological perspective has yet emerged, but Keller and Golley do an excellent job of sampling the various issues. For example, Part One includes five papers that take sides on whether one should emphasize the entities in ecosystems (the Eleatic approach) or concentrate on the processes that are occurring (the Milesian stance.) Part Three presents the debate between the rational and the empirical approaches to ecology; Part Four between reductionism and holism; and the final section gives consideration to what ties (if any) should exist between contemporary evolutionary theory and ecosystems science.
I have used the volume (in early manuscript form) as the primary text for a graduate seminar I taught last year on "Philosophical Issues in Ecology" at the University of Maryland. Most students in the seminar were amazed to discover that philosophical issues have a history within the scientific practice of ecology, and they found the chapters of the book to be well- chosen illustrations of the various attitudes now vying for a permanent place in the evolving philosophy of ecology.
I was quite impressed by how the editors were able to winnow down the component papers to their most essential elements and by how the publisher was able to put this volume on the street at a price that is affordable to the typical graduate student. I foresee a significant potential for this compendium as a textbook and as a catalyst for initiating productive debate on issues that address not only ancient philosophical abstractions, but affect our attitudes towards urgent contemporary problems as well.

Very important book!

This is one of the best books in the field of ecological sciences. Nowadays, there are few ecologists who use the 'search light' approach (sensu Popper). Theory is considered a secondary issue by the many people of the present generation, who think that a real ecologist should just "go to the field and describe what he sees there" (the 'bucket approach').

However, without a deep knowledge of the ideas, hypotheses, theories and history of Ecology, a researcher is unable to properly test knowledge, do valid generalizations, and thus contribute to the advancement of the field. This book provides an excellent 'Epistemology of Ecology', and together with McInstosh's "Background of Ecology" should be read by every student in the undergrad course, and also by professionals.

Eimer's work is a magnificent opening up of these marginalized people and the issues they face. Reading highly encouraged.

David Eimer's book "The Emperor Far Away: Travels at the Edge of China" discusses the issue of China's minorities in their various respective regions. Careful not to make any sweeping generalizations, Eimer traveled personally to each region to interview the respective members of the individual groups. Through a careful process of one-on-one interviews, shared travel experiences, and active listening; Eimer was able to get these people, typically reserved toward foreigners, to open up with their true feelings.

The book is in four major sections; the people in Northwestern China known as the Uighurs, the Tibetan struggle, the massive conglomeration of identities in Southern China and the Golden Triangle, and finally the ethnic Koreans and Russians in the cold and bitter North.

In section one, Eimer describes the absolute uniqueness of this part of the world. The landscape, people, culture, and languages have existed in essentially the same forms for thousands of years, largely untouched by the outside world. The spread of Buddhism from India and Islam from Afghanistan into pre-dynastic China occurred in these remote and desolate deserts. This is a region of the world that resisted the might of China's most powerful dynasties (and even then the Yuan had to grant them a semi-independent state). Now, this region is undergoing rapid change as the might of modernization and sinicization combine. Some of these cities are already converted to majority Han population, and that spread is all but guaranteed to continue as the CCP suppresses traditional Uighur culture and language.

In section two, Eimer travels to Tibet. Here the book takes on a different tone. As Eimer discusses similar issues to the Uighurs, one cannot help but feel that the Tibetans have already been beaten, a possible warning to other minorities. While their identity persists, they seem a broken people who are rapidly losing their will to continue the struggle.

In section three, Eimer goes to the deep South of China. Here the border is very porous and the minorities travel largely as they please. Their relationship with the CCP is an unusual one. They play the role of the "happy dancing minorities" for the government and numerous tourists, but still live their private lives, largely unaffected by big government. They could be described as wearing a mask when the big brother is in town, but as soon as he turns his back, they let loose. This had led them to preserve much of their identity and culture, albeit it secretly.

Finally in section four, Eimer travels to the remote and cold North of China along the border with N. Korea. His discussion of the 'third Korea' and China's fears are unparalleled and alone make the book a worthy read, especially for any student of international policy in the region. His justifications for China's support of N. Korea are unique and shine new light on an unconsidered reason for China's motivations.

It is worth noting that Eimer only intended to get the often censored minority viewpoint present in this book. He makes no effort to challenge their challenges to the central government, and one is left angry at the 'bully' CCP. While these may be justified feelings, one should always strive to see the other side, and while this book presents the complexity of minority issues wonderfully, it does little to defend the CCP's actions. Therefore, I believe one should strive to understand the CCP's motivations after reading this book.

Good book overall

Good book overall. Authored captured the tourist vantage of NW/SWChina and SE Asia. Although the unending assault on the Han got a little tiring, even though I happen to agree with some of the assessment. As an alternative, Rob Gifford's China Road was a more insightful read to the region.

Still Worth the Effort

This book is essentially a personal travelogue chocked full of strong opinions. Eimer spends the first third of the book complaining about how the Uyghurs are being treated, punctuated by his own personal adventures in Xinjiang. Then he does the same for Tibet, Yunnan and Dongbei. Everywhere he goes he finds crimes against the local people perpetrated by the central government. Much of what he observes comes from his frequent visits to local bars drinking "watery beer." If you are looking for an indictment of Han China (past and present), this book will serve you well. But the steady drumbeat of negative comments and innuendo against the Han Chinese and the Chinese central government might seem wearing and tedious after the first few chapters. It becomes a tax on the reader who still finds Eimer's insight and journalist prowess worth the effort. Somewhat disturbing is his empathy with the minorities who wield knives and axes in crowded train stations, and his seeming disdain for minorities who have decided to join the civilization-state.
But overall it is still a good book written by a talented traveler adventurer and journalist.

Practical Methods for Administering Quality Systems

20 years before anyone in the US heard of ISO 9000, Juran proposed the same ideas. He described comprehensive, documented quality management systems that were backed up by performance metrics and quality audits. Juran also pioneered quality circles and teams long before these ideas became cliche.
I find Juran immensely useful in my quality practice. This book remains one the standard works that I keep going back to. Juran's concepts are much more "applied" than "theoretical". Deming's works seem so distant, and esoteric. Juran has been there, done that. And, his methods work!

Good guide and information. Looks of information that needs study; however, it is not written for activities outside of the normal plant manufacturing world where one-of-a-kind product exist and are being made.

Great Quality Textbook

This is one of the basics (the other is Juran's Quality Control Handbook, at three times the thickness / cost; I also recommend the old "DataMyte Handbook" which was a company 'give-away' in the '80's). I have used previous editions for many years, and just bought this one since there are several available used, and I've been recommending them for the thoughful and documented rationale for the justification of n=30 sample size. That's just one example of the usefulness of this text in practical statistics for manufacturing and similar business applications. I recommend it highly.

rip off, sorry but it's true.

While anything with Clavell's name attached to it is simply marvelous - and don't get me wrong, this is still a wonderful story - this is just the incomplete, chopped up, TV version of his incredible book 'Whirlwind.' There is nothing new; don't let the 'love story' bit fool you. Entire plots and characters are left out, or are mentioned only in passing. There is no intelligent reason to buy this book. Buy Whirlwind instead. Coronet Books has managed to take money from me for an incomplete version of a book I have already read. Disgusting. Three stars is very, very generous.

Watered down Whirlwind...

Unfortunately, James Clavell and his publisher fought during the last few years of his life. The result was that his final Asian saga novel, Whirlwind, is out of print. Escape is a watered down version of that novel, developed for a movie script. The core story is still there, but to get Clavell's intended story, buy Whirlwind at a used bookstore or online auction site.

Doing Well by Doing Good!

In the October 2005 issue of Reason Magazine, John Mackey, Milton Friedman, and T.J. Rogers debated whether businesses had any larger social responsibility than to maximize profits for shareholders: Mackey was the lone voice for the affirmative. 7+ years later, Conscious Capitalism can best be thought of as an extension and years-later elaboration on Mackey's argument. This book is one part spirited defense of free market capitalism and several parts description of how businesses can and should become more aware of ALL stakeholders (shareholders, workers, customers, distributors, the environment and the community.)

Before going into the how-to's, Mackey starts with a spirited but brief defense of market capitalism. Mackey recounts how he started as a co-founder of a co-op, but left largely because others' political agendas - largely, anti-market - prevented, in Mackey's judgement, the co-op from serving its customers well. Mackey built the store that would come to be Whole Foods and discovered the potential of markets and market transactions to change people's lives. (Lest we forget, markets are less about exploitation and zero-sum thinking than they are about voluntary positive-sum transactions, each party providing what the other wants.) Sadly, when most of us think of market capitalism, we tend to think of Ayn-Rand-like glorification of selfishness and greed as well as economic reductionism (reducing everything to purely economic calculation sans 'the human element.') Needless to say, this is a perception Mackey rightly wants to change.

The rest of the book - the meat and potatoes - are about Mackey's conception of "conscious capitalism" - companies who do well by doing good. Mackey's favorite examples: Google, Amazon, Costco, Southwest Airlines, The Container Store, and (who else?) Whole Foods Market. These are companies who do well by workers, customers, distributors, investors, and other shareholders. They are driven by purpose and vision, create a good culture internally and externally, have good values-focused leadership, and can easily answer the question "What difference would there be in the world if we didn't exist?"

The book examines how these (and other) companies exemplify conscious capitalism's four tenets: (a) have and keep to a strong vision for the company, (b) have value-focused leadership, (c) try as best as you can to take care of all stakeholders (investors, workers, customers, etc) rather than seeing them as antagonistic to each other, (d) create a strong culture internally and externally. Whole Foods, for instance, has a strong mission of bettering people's eating habits. Southwest Airlines has always gone out of its way to create a good and relatively egalitarian work environment. Google cares as much about creating beneficial tools that people can use as it does about increasing profits. Etc.

One of the areas Mackey touches on in the book's appendix, but I wish he'd focus on more - is convincing us that businesses practising conscious capitalism can be successful while doing good things. His appendix cites some good data available elsewhere, but doesn't really go much into that data. (And one has to wonder, if conscious capitalism is a good business strategy, why haven't more folks been 'doing' it a long time ago? After all, markets reward those who are successful. Jack Welch - about whom Mackey has nothing remotely positive to say, with good reason - successfully ran General Electric for many years with his very unconscious capitalism.) Of course, it does make sense that treating stakeholders well is good for business (customers will support those who treat them weil, workers will work harder and stay longer when they are happy, etc.) But I couldn't really see a skeptic being very convinced by this book. (One objection not spoken to: Mackey is clear that conscious capitalism sometimes requires sacrificing short-term gains for long-term gains, but, will one really be able to secure investors, pay distributors fairly, etc, if one is quick to subordinate short-term gains to anticipated long-term gains?)

Anyhow, this book was a pleasure to read. It is refreshing to see an author like Mackey defending the idea that one CAN do well by doing good, one CAN do good things for others and (unapologetically) make a profit. To this reader, at least, this is what capitalism and markets are supposed to be: companies and consumers voluntarily making positive sum transactions producing "mutual gains from trade."

This book should be required reading in all business schools.

I found this book to be enormously inspiring. When I finished it, I felt as though I'd had an evangelical experience. It makes you wonder why business hasn't always been conducted in this way. I guess the answer is, because we didn't know any better. We had to evolve to this point, just as we've stopped pouring industrial waste into our rivers and no longer x-ray our feet at the shoe store.

I'm no tree-hugger. I'm not even that much of an environmentalist, but I do recognize a good idea when I read about it. We have a responsibility to our planet and to each other to make this world the best it can be. John Mackey may have amalgamated the ideas of a lot of other people, and he may even have co-opted the term "conscious capitalism" from Muhammad Yunus (I did my homework), but he deserves an enormous amount of credit for what he did do, i.e. put these ideas into practice and then bring them to public consciousness by writing his book.

I didn't know much about Mackey before reading the book, only what was in the news a few years ago about his postings on the Yahoo! message boards. At the time I thought his behavior reprehensible, but given that no charges were filed and that the buyout of Wild Oats was allowed to proceed (and now reflecting on his account of the events), I am inclined to believe that the "news" we were given was incomplete and more than a little tainted by the usual media spin.

In summary, I am completely taken with Mackey's ideas as expressed in his book and can only hope that the world takes notice. I must confess that as I read it I did have a sudden urge to break into a chorus of "Kum Ba Yah" from time to time. It can come across as a bit treacly. But it is a hopeful paradigm for the future of business.

Conscious Capitalism

I would not usually read a book like this. I'm a social worker, not a business person, but I am a Whole Foods fan, and go there just for the boost I get from the positive energy that abounds there. Truth be told, my daughter persuaded me to give the book a chance. I'm glad I did... As someone who has never worked in industry, the book helped me re-examine some of my premises, but did so in a non-judgmental or threatening way. I have dedicated my life to helping others, and this book showed how a conscious business can do the same, not by taking advantage of customers and employees, but by providing them with goods and opportunity they voluntarily wish to exchange time and money for. Not sure I am willing to change my political stripes at this point, but I did enjoy the opportunity to hear a different point of view explained with compassionate concern.

Better download the plans and put a CD with your book

The book is just the written instructions to go along with the videos and plans from the author's website. The book by itself is nearly useless as there isn't even a small print of the plans with dimensions in the book.

Before you buy this book, I strongly suggest going to the author's website at buildyourtools dot com. Download all the plans, watch all the videos, then decide if you need the book.

If the website ever goes down or the author decides not to support this book, you'll be out of luck. So if you buy this book, I'd download all the files related to it and burn them on a CD or put them on a flash drive to keep with the book.

The main component, the plastic feed head, is an amalgam of DIY and parts from Makerbot's 3D printer. No instructions are given on building the melt head itself. You could go buy that and add it to just about any CNC mill to build a 3D printer. There are a lot of open source projects out there.

The goal is laudable - DIY something cheaper than the existing kits out there now. I just think the book could have been better thought out.

FYI- while I'm writing this review, I find the author's website, buildyourtools(dot)com, is currently unavailable. Only a temporary thing, but as an owner of this book that makes me nervous.

Update: After a lot more reading and thinking about it, I've decided to return the book. I've never returned a book before, but the lack of plans in the book and the lack of dimensions on the downloadable plans really bothers me. It feels like half of a book.

Very good book with tons of information about building a 3d Printer. Also, includes info to change it to a small router with a Dremel Rotary tool installed. Included are lists of required hardware and online web links to resources.

I was very impressed with the book. Also the full sized plans can be downloaded, and the assembly videos are available, as well.

Great concept, poorly implemented

I'd been looking for a book to augment my current (basic) knowledge of the 3D printing landscape. This book seemed like it would hit the mark, but it left me with an empty feeling. I think primarily this was because of the complete mess they made of the XYZ planes. As soon as I read how they planned to implement it I said to myself "that ain't right!". And sure enough at the back they owned up and admitted they'd made a massive mistake but it was too late for them to go and fix the problem - full steam ahead, damn the the correctness, schedule must be met! Hopefully they'll do a second rev to fix this.
