About the Author

Diane Engelhardt has been an ESL instructor for more than 20 years and began her career as an instructor at Berlitz. She has taught conversational and business English to a wide variety of students in Canada and Germany. She also has prepared students for the TOEFL, Cambridge First Certificate, and London Chamber of Commerce (English for Business and Commerce, Intermediate Level). She currently teaches at Royal Roads University International Student Centre in Victoria, Canada.

Pretty good.. great value.. small and light for international travel.

It's a very good book for teaching everyday conversation skills. I have had to go through, however and remove some of their suggestions like "I get of on...", and "... really turns me on." as a way of describing something that you like.. I just explain to my students that those terms have sexual meaning now, and need to be understood, but I don't advise using the terms themselves.

I'm a grad student in TESOL, and I find this book very useful, both for tutoring and student teaching and for school projects. It's a great reference for frequently used, pragmatically appropriate English phrases, organized by situation.

About the Author
Gavin Maxwell was born in 1914. In 1945 he bought the small Hebridean island of Soay and tried to establish a shark fisher. This resulted in his first book Harpoon at a Venture. His other books include Ring of Bright Water, which sold more than a million copies, The Rocks Remain, The House of Elrig and Raven Seek Thy Brother. Gavin Maxwell died in 1969.

Great story but abridged version

Gavin Maxwell's stories of his retreat from civilization and love of nature should be read by many, many more people, especially on this side of the pond. While I loved the stories (had read Ring of Bright Water before but not the other two volumes), the readers should know that this compendium does not include all material from any of the three original volumes. As Austin Chinn (editor) points out in his introduction, they were abridged due to publisher's space requirements and none of the three were totally spared. While I understand the modern facts of economic life, this is now one person's (or some committee's) version of what the salient points of the original works were and an unsuspecting reader will be left with a less robust piece of literature. As the original volumes are out of print, this version is better than not reading Maxwell's stories. I intend to find used complete versions of the second and third parts of the story.

Deeply Affecting

A difficult book (or trilogy of abridged books) to review, this - I suppose I should start by conceding that, despite the dark moments, the catastrophes, the sadnesses, the nature red in tooth and claw moments and the man blood-stained with gun and whatever comes to hand moments, this trilogy made me laugh out loud with joy and merriment more than any book I can remember reading since adolescence. The writing is superbly Thoreauvian at its best, particularly the descriptive passages of natural landscapes and, of course, otters! Maxwell doesn't pack the Transcendentalist reflective heft of Thoreau (What writer does?). But this is a good thing. I can't imagine Thoreau falling in love with an otter and writing so deftly about both them and his feelings toward them.

Indeed, reading this book is more than a little like riding an emotional rollercoaster. But it is not in any way what is called "sentimental" - a word which, in so many cases, is simply what those lacking in emotional depth are wont to term the writings of those who possess such depths. The writer is an Oxford-educated stylist and man-of-learning whose love for the natural world and the wild creatures that inhabit it is deep and abiding.

What else can I say? Well, there is a philosophical subtext here. On the first page, Maxwell writes that, "I had yet to learn that happiness can neither be achieved nor held by endeavour." Happiness is something one encounters - A hard lesson, but one which the reader (this one, in any event) feels he has learned, along with Maxwell, at the end.

Brilliant writing, sadness abounds

I saw the movie "Right of Bright Water" as a boy, and the only scene I remembered was the otter's death. When I purchased the movie as an adult I had to skip that scene. With that said, the writing is superb, and his ability to tell a story equally brilliant but be aware that many animals meet a tragic and senseless death at the hands of humans.

I have been a full time online marketer for many years and the one thing that I have learned that is a constant in this business is that everything changes. Amazing resource!

What a tremendously in depth resource that completely educated me and opened my eyes to the world of successful SEO optimization. It is like an easy to understand text book that could easily be used to teach college level courses. Even though this book is very thorough and full of important technical information, it is written in a very easy to digest and understand writing style. The author is obviously a master at taking complicated subject matter and breaking it down to where the average person can easily understand it. I had previously bought a couple other books on SEO, but they were so complicated to read and written from a very technical standpoint. This book is completely the opposite. When you are done reading it you will actually understand all aspects of SEO, including specifics for all of the Google products that SEO must work with flawlessly if you want your website to ever be seen by the masses. All-in-all this book is very useful and excellent! I would recommend it to anyone!

SEO has always been a mystery to me, but this really starts to help me understand how exactly to go about making your website competitive in the terms of SEO. SEO has gone through so many changes in the last few years that it's really hard to keep track, but this will give you the most up to date information--and what I found interesting was that it also addressed the changes that google went through and why. This is a book with tons of valuable information from an author who has great credentials. Great resource, highly recommended.

Great book for any Avatar fan

My son loves the Avatar books. These books are quite detailed text wise and will be fairly difficult for a younger child to read and maybe even keep the attention of. I would say the average age of these books to read alone is about 9. 8 if they are a high level reader. My son had the Earth book and asked me to buy Water, Air and Fire. He carries these around in his backpack and reads them at school. If your son likes avatar and doesn't mind a rather wordy book, he will love these books.

I am attaching a page of the fire book so you can get an idea of how much text is on a page and the words it uses that most kids at younger ages won't be able to read - words like catapults, conquest, campaigns, dominant, barren, etc. My son has asked me what a lot of the words are.

I was looking for the story (chapter book) and this turned out to be a fact book. But anyway, I read it, our son is reading it now and we are going to buy the next one.
But I'm still looking for the story of Avatar in book form, so if anybody knows what to buy, let us know...

About the Author
Arthur J. Keown is the R. B. Pamplin Professor of Finance at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He received his bachelor’s degree from Ohio Wesleyan University, his MBA from the University of Michigan, and his doctorate from Indiana University. An award-winning teacher, he is a member of the Academy of Teaching Excellence at Virginia Tech, he has received five Certificates of Teaching Excellence, the W. E. Wine Award for Teaching Excellence, and the Alumni Teaching Excellence Award, and in 1999 he received the Outstanding Faculty Award from the State of Virginia. Professor Keown is widely published in academic journals. His work has appeared in Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Journal of Financial Research, Journal of Banking and Finance, Financial Management, Journal of Portfolio Management, and many others. Two of his books are widely used in college finance classes all over the country – Financial Management and Foundations of Finance: The Logic and Practice of Financial Management. Professor Keown is a Fellow of Decision Sciences Institute and served as Department Head for twelve years. In addition, he has served as the co-editor of both the Journal of Financial Research and the Financial Management Association’s Survey and Synthesis Series. He was recently inducted into Ohio Wesleyan’s Athletic Hall of Fame for wrestling. His daughter and son are both married and live in Madison, Wisconsin, and Denver, Colorado, while he and his wife live in Blacksburg, Virginia, where he collects original art from Mad magazine.

Superb text on a vital topic- basics everyone should know

Personally, I think that we would all be better off if we spent more time in our education process teaching people about the realities of their economic lives. This is especially true of their choice of careers, managing those resources, and preparing for their "golden years". I could nominate a few topics I think we could cease teaching in order to have room for the necessary classes to provide people with real life financial management skills that can have a direct impact on the improvement of all aspects of their lives.

This book, "Personal Finance - Turning Money into Wealth" is a fantastic tool for students and ANY interested reader. I wish everyone would work through this book (or one very much like it). While it is never too late to develop these skills, the younger a person gets a plan for their economic life in place, the more power it has and the better off they will be long term.

I like the way Prof. Keown emphasizes basic principles (he has 15 of them) and planning. He begins the book by providing the foundation of financial planning, teaching the student how to measure their financial health and using that to inform their plan, understanding the Time Value of Money (a topic so vital that no one should graduate high school without knowing, in my opinion), and the basics of tax planning.

The author then provides some great information on managing money by understanding the realities of cash and liquid assets, credit cards (open credit) and the traps it represents, using consumer loans in PLANNED BORROWING (another important topic that is almost unknown to most consumers because of the misuse of open credit), and buying homes and automobiles.

I really enjoyed his next discussion on insurance. He talks about the various kinds of insurance, the kinds of protection they provide at what costs, and especially the situations in which buying insurance makes sense and when it does not.

The section on managing investments is good, solid, but BASIC information. Anyone doing anything beyond a few basic retirement plans will need to study other materials. This section is the one where I have a tiny quibble with the author. He differentiates investing and speculation by saying that investing involves putting money in assets that provide returns - stocks, bonds, etc - but that speculating is putting money in things like baseball cards that only have a price based on what others are willing to pay. I sort of understand what I think he is trying to say.

However, all investing is in some sense speculating. The buyer and seller have different views of the future (speculating about the future) and so they make opposite choices at a certain price. Either of them would change their view, presumably, at some other price. Stocks do not have a built in return and many do not pay dividends and too often nowadays their residual value is zero. Too often people buy stocks simply because they are going up (the greater fool theory) and get badly burned as we saw in the Internet Bubble collapse in early 2000. In any case, the caution the author advocates is sufficient and sound. I am just concerned that others use the terms "investment" and "speculation" differently than the author and might confuse those trying to enter the fray for the first time.

This fine text ends with a discussion of life cycle issues such as retirement planning, estate planning, and how all the pieces studied fit together into the grand plan.

The author also provides online helps such as problems, quizzes, and especially many useful spreadsheets that the student can not only use, but study to help them build their own that will be tailored to the student's specific situation. There is also a workbook with the basics of using a financial calculator and the worksheets called for in the text.

This is a superb text on a vital topic. Strongly Recommended for general readers as well as students in a class on this subject (which EVERY college student should be REQUIRED to take - or pass out of by test).

No Access Card was Included

I love my Pearson Personal Finance book! This book explains everything from ratios to tricks with your taxes using easy to understand explanations and fun corrolations to well-known tv shows. It is everything and more than I had hoped for upon purchasing it. When I bought it, though, it said that it included the access card for the MyFinanceLab and eText online. I never received the card and had to purchase, again, the MyFinanceLab seperately at $55. This book had already cost me almost $200 which was supposed to include the MyFinanceLab, but it wound up costing me a lot more. I would give the book alone 5 stars, however the unincluded MyFinanceLab brings that score down. Make sure before purchasing this, the access card is indeed included when you buy the Personal Finance and MyFinanceLab package.

A thought provoking and engaging book

I read this book knowing nothing about its authors; after reading it I have subscribed to James Dale Davidson's financial newsletter! In a world that appears to have gone mad with fear and self-doubt, Davidson and Rees-Mogg provide a grand theory that explains why the world is the way it is in general. What they call "megapolitics" helps to explain how technological innovation drives not only the economy but also international relations. This book challenged my understanding of the internet by showing how advanced telecommunications changes the fundamental relation between the individual and the state. Even if you do not agree with Davidson and Rees-Mogg's theory, the bibliography of this book is so well researched that it alone justifies the purchase. I enjoyed the book so much that I purchased a copy for my family to read. A "must read" hardly does this book justice.

Cyberpunk future

This is a very interesting book with disturbing implications: the authors contend that, in our lifetimes we will see the messy demise of nation states, with the most advanced of the Western democracies falling the farthest and hardest. The grim future they depict is essentially that of Stephenson's "Snow Crash" or Gibson's "Neuromancer".

In making their case, the authors draw an interesting and convincing parallel between today's concepts of patriotism and national duty, and the Church in late medieval Europe.

I'd fault the book for its hyped up rhetoric and excessive repetition of the same historical factoids. Also, the dire predictions of this 1997 book are somewhat undermined by the predictions of the scope of the Y2K computer failures, and also by the odd depiction of Peruvian ex-dictator Fujimori as the wave of the future.

I've read all of the books by Davidson and Rees-Mogg, and was pleasantly surprised by their latest effort. The thing that's particularly inspiring about this book is the opportunity to consider futures that are not promoted by typical pundits and "experts." It's refreshing to be able to not only have an alternate view, but also to be able to review the research that has gone into the analysis, which enables one to see how the model being presented was developed. Even if reality does not show up exactly as presented, it's certainly thought-provoking.

He works full-time for Atmospheric and Environmental Research, Inc. as a scientific programmer.
