I anticipated that Numerology would be a well-written, user-friendly book. I am pleased to announce that Dudley's latest book exceeded my expectations in every respect. It is especially noteworthy that the author's practice of summarizing the history of each topic that he discusses is carried over to this book. .Some chapters that contain very little mathematics are...fascinating. The chapters on Pythagoreanism and the ones on gematria, that is the art and science of assigning numbers to letters and thus to words, are in this category. The chapters on the history of numerology, the role of sevens in the Bible, books on numerology, and the chapter on round numbers are also nonmathematical, but well worth reading. In conclusion, the book is a delight - one that you will be glad to have read, but sorry to have finished. -- The Mathematics Teacher

Most of us, regardless of mathematical training, firmly believe that numbers have great power and importance. Fewer in number, there are those who believe numbers have the ability to control events and determine our fates. These latter people, numerologists, are the subject of Dudleys most recent examination of the abuses and misuses of numbers...Dudley provides a history of numerology starting with Pythaogras and his number mystic disciples some 2500 years ago, and provides numerous examples, past and present. Featured here are the Bible-numberists, who placed special significance on the numerous sevens and perfect squares found in the Bible; the pyramidologists, who believed that the world would end on August 20, 1953 (oops!); the modern-day Oxford scholar who believes that Shakespeare wrote his sonnets with great dedication to triangular numbers; and many others. A fun read for anybody who enjoys other peoples silliness. Requiring no specific mathematical ! knowledge beyond arithmetic. Numerology is highly recommended. -- CHOICE Magazine

About the Author
Underwood Dudley received his PhD from the University of Michigan in 1965 and taught briefly at Ohio State University before accepting a position at DePauw University where he has taught since 1967. He has been active in the publications program of The Mathematical Association of America (MAA) for over fifteen years as an Associate Editor of Mathematics Magazine,. Editor of the College Mathematics Journal, Collaborating Editor of the Problem Section of the American Mathematical Monthly, and Chair of the Editorial Board of the New Mathematical Library.

His other publications include Mathematical Cranks, The Trisectors, and Readings for Calculus published by the MAA, as well as Elementary Number Theory published by W. H. Freeman.

Great, but non-math majors might get lost

Dudley Underwood's book attempts to debunk both New Age and quasi-Christian use of numerology. He succeeds to an amazing degree.
Particularly good is his treatment of 666 (the mysterious number of the Beast in Rev. 13:18, which in league with most biblical scholars, I believe had meaning for the original readers of 1900 years ago). Professor Underwood shows that 666 is no more of a threat to us than 13, broken mirrors, or black cats.
This book is not for the mathematically uninitiated, however. Underwood writes as if he assumes all his readers know more about math than Isaac Newton and Plato combined. If you can get past the esoterica, you'll enjoy this book. . . and maybe be saved from the crackpot sheisters too.

This is an excellent counterargument against numerology.

Contrary to the opinions of many misguided souls, numbers do not have personalities. In yet another of his excellent attempts to overcome silliness in the name of mathematics, Underwood Dudley presents a reasonably strong case against numerology. The problem is that the case is strong only if you are reasonable. I applaud him for pointing out the absurdity of numerology, although few minds will be changed as a consequence of reading this book.

I'm an award-winning US expat novelist and a professional writer. I'm also a full-time cook, cleaner, chauffeur, and work-at-home Dad for three amazing children, and the lucky husband of a loving and very supportive wife. Born on a now-defunct Air Force base near Austin, Texas and raised in Fort Wayne, Indiana, I emigrated to Israel only months before the first Gulf War in 1990. I'm a Sergeant in the Israel Defense Forces Reserves, where I served for 12 years as a Combat Medic. Since 2002, I've worked as an independent marketing writer, copywriter and consultant.

A gripping read

Galerie is a gripping read, rich with intrigue from beginning to end. As much a thriller as a “Holocaust novel”, while also filled with fact-based information. I was immediately drawn into the story, and found myself wanting to speed through the pages to see what would unfold next. The main character, Vanesa, the Israeli-born daughter of two Holocaust survivors, and now an historian, is obsessed with uncovering the story behind her father and paternal grandfather’s wartime experiences. The book moves back and forth through time: wartime, 1970s and 80s, and “present day” 1990s. Likewise, locations change: Prague, Therezinstadt, Israel, USA and other smaller locations. The time shifts allow intrigue and understanding, creating a compelling build-up to the climax. The story that unfolds is hinted at throughout the book, but it was only on my second reading that I recognized the breadcrumbs for what they were.

With so many novels set around WWII, saying something new is quite a feat. Yet, in this novel, Greenberg pulls it off. Yes, there are shades of the DaVinci Code (strange symbols imbued with unclear meaning, shady and mysterious characters) and Sarah’s Key (modern exploration of a very personal Holocaust experience that represents a far larger experience; shifting between different times and places), but still Galerie hits an original note. And, unlike many such novels, it made me think. My recommendation: read all the way to the end of the book, including the historical notes provided after the end of the novel itself.

I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys historical fiction or historical thrillers in general, and specifically anyone who has an interest in Holocaust fiction.

Holocaust suspense thriller

Steven Greenberg's second novel, Galerie, is a work of Holocaust historical fiction. It is a very well researched, action-packed page-turner. Greenberg is the son-in-law of a third cousin of mine. I met him once, in Tel Aviv, in 2010. While I do not view this as çonflict of interest 'in writing a review (I've panned books by writers with whom I have a much closer relationship), I do feel it ethical to let anyone reading my review to know about this.The story, told by the protagonist's camp counselor/eventual lover/future husband/subsequently divorced ex-husband, starts at a summer camp in Wisconsin in the early 1980s and goes through the early 1990s, moving to Tel Aviv with flashbacks to Prague and the Camps during the Second World War.Vanesa Neuman, the protagonist with a PhD in history, is the daughter of Holocaust survivor Michael Neuman, whose father, Jakob Neuman and uncle Tomas raised her. Upon Michael's death, Vanesa obtains her father's diary which was filled with stories and symbols so 'startling'that Vanesa was determined to do the necessary research at both Yad Vashem in Israel and the Jewish Museum of Prague to discover, if possible, what her parents, grand father and uncle did to survive as they never revealed these horrors to Vanesa.The untold story that Vanesa starts to discover is sufficient to cause unsuccessful murder attempts on her life as well as the murders of others involved with her attempt to find out the true story of her parents, grandfather and uncle's survival during the War.To what extent did those who survived but were not 'on the run' or in hiding collaborate with the Nazis? Were their acts despicable? How does one view those acts of survival? How does the survivor live the post-war future?These are the fundamental questions that Greenberg poses in a well written, easy to read, appealing manner. I don't want to go into any more detail, here, because it would diminish that intruiging, page-turning aspect away from this book. This is a piece of fiction that will definitely hold your interest and I recommend it without any qualifications!

I thought I was going to hate it. We open with a female protagonist in ...

I was given a copy of this book as part of a Novel Publicity tour. I’ll be honest, when I began to read the first chapter of this book, I thought I was going to hate it. We open with a female protagonist in the middle of an attack by two men on the streets of Prague. I thought, ‘great, once again we resort to rape as a plot device’. But it turned out I jumped to conclusions. While the attack was disturbing in its own way, it wasn’t rape, and it did fit into the plot. So don’t let that first chapter turn you off from this book.

The book opens in Prague, 1991, and flashes back to the 1980’s and 1940’s through flashbacks and memories. What I found interesting is that the narrator is the unnamed once-husband of the protagonist, Vanesa Neuman. He’s not present throughout most of the story, yet he’s the one telling the tale. Makes one wonder how reliable he is. As the mystery Vanesa follows takes her deeper into danger, and she becomes more obsessed with her search, the husband’s feelings of abandonment and rejection color the tale while still attempting to tell the full story with every detail.

When Vanesa’s father passes away, she inherits a journal he wrote when he was a boy in Prague. In it, he tells tales of people from all different walks of life, from all over the world. All the characters are Jewish, but they are so different from one another that Vanesa has to wonder where he got the ideas from. Did he meet all those people? He’d also drawn a strange symbol on the pages, and it intrigues Vanesa even more.

So she goes to Prague, with the help of an uncle who still has ties to Czechoslovakia, to find answers. All the pieces of the puzzle start coming together through flashbacks to the Nazi occupation of Prague, the stories written by Vanesa’s father, and the narrator’s own observations of Vanesa and her quest. Armed with nothing but her brains and unwavering resolve bordering on obsession, Vanesa follows the clues to one horrifying, inevitable conclusion. But will she survive to tell the tale?

Mr. Greenburg did a really good job of recreating each time period and location. I had a hard time putting this book down, wanting to know what would happen to Vanesa and what the mystery was. I didn’t figure it out until very close to the reveal, which is truly terrifying.

Yoga History

This book is primarily concerned with the history of yoga and source texts, with very little attention paid to the practice of yoga. Of the hundreds of yogasanas, only a handful are covered (possibly as few as twenty) and there is zero coverage of yoga as it has evolved in the West over the past 40 years and no mention of Iyengar or Bikram. If you are a practitioner of yoga then you will find little of practical value in this book. If you are an armchair yogi with an interest in history, you will find what you want here.

YOGA MEANS TO YOKE! Its not all about asana!

Yoga is about so much more than excersize. To the man down there with his sad review, Yoga means to YOKE to be in union with GOD. The asanas were brought to the West and now it is just an exercise routine to you and millions of others. Asana means simple this - SEAT. Seat to meditate with God. How dare you call people who may not do 500 asana a day "armchair yogis". That is highly offensive! I suggest you do your research SIR before you go babbling bad reviews, as this author is one of the most sought after yoga and related topics authors! Yoga is about much more than Patanjali's methods of stretching to prepare yogis for meditation. Which apparently you dont do, its obvious.. so you will NEVER recieve the true benefits. Youre just going thru the motions if you are only doing asana for exercise or you think its cool. You will not gain anything but a nicer looking body. And if thats all youre looking for I suggest you go to your local gym and do pilates or lift some weights. Or perhaps you may find a Guru who will teach you the tru meaning of Yoga, which I hope you do. Learn some humility!

addictive escapism

MMM has been under intense scrutiny for the past few seasons due to the exit of their innovative torch carrier Margiela himself. So in a way I felt this book was a bit of an epitaph archiving the last 20 years of the brand. True to MMM style, it's abstract and beautiful (i may just need another copy to have several of the images framed.) It's complete sensory overload. I've been waiting months to receive this book, so I'm not sure if it could have ever lived up to my ridiculous expectations. I for one, find this kind of design as pure fashion escapism. That being said it's wonderful in size and content. The book is a bit traditional as far as modern printing techniques are concerned and I was secretly hoping the design would have been a bit more Margielian. Not that this book needed any additional trickery, the imagery is quite cerebral, sure to take you on an extremely intimate fashion odyssey. A must have for any devotee of the brand and sure to bring endless inspiration from your wardrobe to a global perspective on the very basic ideals of fashion. VIVA LA MARGIELA!

Don't get ripped off!

US Army manual TM 31-210 "Improvised Munitions Handbook" is a FREE publication because it is a US Gov't publication. It has already been paid for by US taxpayers (as ALL US Army manuals) and is available online in PDF format FREE OF CHARGE. If you have a printer, there is no reason you should be buying this book.

Interesting book.

Interesting read for sure. In harder times when a person needs to defend himself and his property this book would come in very handy. It does have some munitions only available to military but for the most part the rest is easily found or made. This is not an experiment book however and a lot of the compounds can explode if they are mishandled. For those who are interested in such things this makes a great read.

Good content, even if it is old

I bought this book for a specific presentation I needed to do at work. People get wrapped up in technology, and forget the basic ideas put forth for structured decomposition and design are the basis that most all of todays latest and greatest ideas are based on.

I suggest reading this book for anyone intrested in designing reliable, maintainable programs.

Also, I bought this book used. It was well worn, but I don't mind. I saved a lot of money, and the words inside are the same on an expensive book, or on a cheap book.

Extremely valuable expecially today

This book is an eye opener. I used to dabble in top down design in the 80's and early 90's whilst being a hobby programmer. Later, during my professional life I was sucked into Object Oriented programming and design and I believed this was the way it is, although it always felt awkward.

I don't want to go into all the details regarding criticism of OOD. You can find enough articles on the net yourself. For my part, I concluded that Structured Design is not obsolete by any means and I bought this book and the one by Page-Jones to get into this field. OOD is something for the code monkey. It's easy to start writing an application without too much planning, since "objects" are so natural for all of us that it is easy to design them, right? Yes, but after a while the development leads inevitably into a swamp and you get stuck halfway to the finish line.

This is where Structured Design comes in. It forces you to think first and program later. This is probably the reason why it fell out of favor with the script kiddy generation in the late 90's and 2000's. The more I read this book, the more I am convinced that it is a true gem. It explains Structured Design for the non academic person and enables access to it due to it's clear language and the way all thoughts and conclusions are laid out in an elaborate way.

Structured Design needs a few modern elements though to cope with programming techniques that didn't really exist in the 80's, primarily exceptions which contradict the principle of SD, as well as derivation of structures/records (which is NOT identical to OOD), but I think it is possible to extend the design philosophy accordingly.

My advice for everybody who is not satisfied with today's toy languages like C++, Java, Ruby etc: Get this book and learn REAL programming. Forget UML. This is the way to go. It will just cost you a lot of sweat, but it is worth it.

S¢ren Kierkegaard (1813-55) was born in Denmark and wrote on a wide variety of themes, including religion, psychology, and literature. He is remembered for his philosophy, which was influential in the development of 20th century existentialism.

true faith is not completely reliant on logic

The value of this work is that it correctly argues that faith is ultimately a choice that cannot be completely supported by logic or rational proof. It was Kierkegaard's experience of losing the chance to be with the person he loved that forced him to confront the absurd nature of faith. Although believers in many religions will argue that their faith is logical and rational, Kierkegaard fully grasped that if conviction is based fully on logic, it does not need faith to support it.

Perhaps the best metaphor can be found in the New Testament passage where Christ invites Peter to walk on water -- Peter takes a step with faith and does not sink, but then looks down, and begins to evaluate the situation using his rational mind, and begins to sink. True faith walks on water. Only true faith could be sufficient to base a life on the conviction that a dead guy in Jerusalem 2,000 years ago came back from the dead and has his own kingdom where his followers will live forever in eternal bliss. On the other hand, this conviction has become so entrenched in the popular culture of the last 2,000 years that it has just become an unremarkable backdrop to the modern world and is considered a socially acceptable belief.

The challenge for a modern christian is to find true faith when they mistakenly believe that the story of Jesus Christ is completely supported by logic and rational thinking. The mere act of mentally assenting to what has been accepted in popular culture, a broad and shallow idea that God and Jesus exist, is not faith at all; just an unexamined conclusion of a lazy mind that has not yet questioned its own surroundings. True faith is a radical departure from the status quo, a renewal of personal conviction despite all contradictions and a recognition of UNCERTAINTY. Without a recognition of uncertainty, faith has no meaning. The strength of true faith is that it acknowledges that uncertainty exists, and yet still forges on in spite of the uncertainty, willingly accepting and embracing the consequences of conviction in the face of uncertainty. There is not fear that the conviction may be misled and flinching because of the uncertainty, there is a recognition that this lack of absolute rational proof and certainty is what gives faith its supreme virtue. This is what makes faith courageous and is something that only mortal humans can do, since angels are blessed with absolute knowledge whereas humans are blessed with uncertainty, which is the only way that true freedom can exist. Without this freedom, the choice of "faith" would not be possible, would not be courageous, and would not make mortals eligible for the reward of heaven.

The believer who claims that all faith is logical has not yet come to the moment of testing, like Abraham, like Kierkegaard, where the object of the soul's deepest longing and only happiness is seen, but yet out of reach. For Kierkegaard it was the girl he loved, that he could never be with, but yet he retained hope and transformed that hope into a lifetime of faith. The personal pain of such an experience leads a person to exclaim "it doesn't make sense!" Only when one reaches the point where it just doesn't make sense can the ultimate nature of real and profound faith be experienced and put into action. Anything else is a shallow beginning, and not yet a sufficient faith to walk on water, just as Peter found when he was invited to take that step...

This book is full of such profound insight because Kierkegaard understood this and knew that faith was not a shallow, cheap or easy achievement:

"In those old days it was different. For then faith was a task for a whole lifetime, not a skill thought to be acquired in either days or weeks. When the old campaigner approached the end, had fought the good fight, and kept his faith, his heart was still young enough not to have forgotten the fear and trembling that disciplined his youth...." (p.42)

Makes a philosopher weak in the knees

FEAR AND TREMBLING stands as one of Soren Kierkegaard's most widely read works. It's brevity is appealing to those with only a marginal interest in philosophy and theology. It's subject matter is what attracts those persons who want to find a nexus between ethics and theology.
In the work, Kierkegaard engages the famous passage in the Old Testament of the bible where Abraham is ordered by God (Yahweh) to sacrifice his son, Isaac. It stands today as the most salient episode in the bible where Plato's EUTHYPHRO dillema is confronted.
Now, what is the EUTHYPHRO dillema, you may ask? The dillema is set out by Socrates in Plato's dialouge of the same name. Basically, it comes down to this: are good and evil intrinsic to the universe itself? Or are the qualities of good and evil decided upon by God (or gods)? If the former is true, then God (or the head of a pantheon of gods) cannot be truly omnipotent, for there is at least one power that even he / she / it must follow. If, on the other hand, good and evil are decided by God(s), then might makes right.
Enter Kierkegaard, who spends the pages of this work acting more-or-less as a defense attorney for Abraham for his even contemplating the murder of his son. For Kierkegaard, the divine-command-theorist, the latter horn of the conundrum (i.e.: might makes right) is the only plausible alternative open for the religious believer. The first horn denies God's sovereign omnipotence over the universe and all of its affairs, which is utterly unacceptable.
So, the Dane offers to us the defense of what he calls the "teleological suspension of ethics." That is to say, while Abraham was acting out of direction from God, he was not subject to the ethical laws of the "everyday" universe that the rest of us live in every day.
That, in brief, is the topic that this book considers. For the complete explanation and polemics of his views, this book is highly recommended. That the subject matter of FEAR AND TREMBLING greatly disturbed Kierkegaard becomes readily obvious in the first pages. If the arguments presented are examined carefully, it is a topic whose implications may very well shock the modern-day theologian as well.

Johannes de silentio is anything but

The ironic pen-name Kierkegaard uses should be more than enough warning that things aren't necessarily what they seem, so if anyone tells you what this book is about, or what Kierkegaard intended, I suggest you take it with a grain of salt, read this book, and decide for yourself.
Students of Kierkegaard will tell you the meaning of this book in terms of his personal life; philosophers will show you its philosophical meaning; the religious will describe it as a treatise on faith. It is probably all of these, and may be even more. The work centers on the exemplary life of Abraham, in particular the story in which he is asked by God to sacrifice his beloved son Isaac - the son given to him as fulfillment of a promise by God himself. This story is fully worthy of the "fear and trembling" the title expects, but it also serves as an archetypal example of faith itself, in uncompromising terms.
It is also a counter-argument against the (in Kierkegaard's view) stifling moral rationalism of Hegel - an argument "on the strength of the absurd" which is nonetheless compelling, even if one were to ultimately reject it. Considering this, it is perhaps fitting that his work - certainly grave and severe - ultimately provides an affirmation of individual self-determination and a wholehearted engagement with the real world and its affairs... a faith which Kierkegaard professed himself incapable of.
Worth the time of reading once or several times. Poetic, but not lighthearted entertainment - then again, who would read a book titled "Fear and Trembling" on a lark?
