The Forty Days of Musa Dagh

This 1933 novel by Austrian-Bohemian writer, Franz Werfel is based on true events that took place during World War I and the Armenian Genocide. It's focus is on the self-defense of a small community of Armenians. The scope of the Genocide were little known until Werfel's novel. The book achieved international success and has been credited with bringing awareness to the world of the events in 1915. It also foreshadows the Holocaust of WWII and the rise of Adolf Hitle and Nazi Germany. According to Wikipedia: Franz Werfel had served as a corporal and telephone operator in the Austro-Hungarian Army artillery during WWI on the Russian front, and later as a propaganda writer for the Military Press Bureau (with Rainer Maria Rilke) in vienna.

Of Tragedy and Hope
By L. King
Published in 1934, Werfel's novel is THE iconic story of the Armenian genocide and of what was, in effect, the Warsaw ghetto of the first World War. For the most part Armenian Christians were led passively to their deaths. Like the Jews under Germany, the cover story was "transfer" and under the cover of a world war innocent Armenians were treated as a potential fifth column deserving nothing better than extermination. Men were conscripted for construction work crews and then killed. Whole villages were sent unprepared on death marches while their churches were turned into mosques and their homes and properties were turned over to their Muslim neighbours. A notable and heroic exception were the 6 (7 in the novel) villages surrounding Musa Dagh, a mountain facing the Mediterranean coast near Antioch and Hatay in what is today southern Turkey.

In contemporary terms the pacing is a bit slow yet it is incredibly moving. The central character Gabriel Bagradian is the scion of an Armenian trading family who has returned home after the death of his older brother Avetis to his ancestral village of Yoghonoluk. with his 13 year old son Stephan and his French wife Juliette. As a former artillery officer in the Ottoman artillery he expected to be drafted into the army he is dismayed to that he is asked to surrender his internal passport and that there is no need for Armenian officer and that his marching orders will be of a different kind. In a short period of time he gradually discerns what is unfolding and of the Turk's plans for his people. Confirming his worst apprehensions he receives news of the ethnic cleansing of Zeitoun to which Werfel devotes a chapter. What today's readers may not realize is that Zeitoun was the emblem of Armenian resistance to the Hamidan massacres of the 1890s having successfully held off the Sultan's forces with a poorly equipped force against an army of 50,000. For Zeitoun to have fallen is a very bad omen indeed.

Gradually Bagradian comes up with a plan which requires that the villagers abandon their homes to the Turks and set up a series of defenses on the mountain in the hope either of rescue (a huge banner made of bed sheets with the words "Christians in Distress, Please Help" is hung on the seaward side of the mountain in the hopes that a passing Allied ship will see it) or outlasting the war. It's put to a vote and a small minority disagree lead by Hurutiun Nokhudian the Protestant pastor and leader of a faction who decide that it is better to be exiled than to risk death in a fight, only later to realize how horribly fatal this was.

What makes the novel work so well is the juxtaposition of Musa Dagh's tragedy of expectant hope with its portrayals of memorable human characters. In addition to the Bagradians we are drawn into the small family of Aram Tomasian a Pastor and Zeitouni refugee, Sarkis Kilikiam the Armenian-Russian army deserter who has been abused most of his life, Hrand Oskanian the pretentious school master, Gonzague Maris, the Greek-American visitor who stays with the resistance but only because he has taken an interest in seducing Juliette, Krikor the village pharmacist and story teller with his library full of books that he cannot read, and Ter Haigasun the village priest who assumes the role of civilian leadership of the community on the mountain. As the siege progresses one encounters both heroism and human flaws as the community slowly and Bagradian himself begins to dissolve under pressure.

Another aspect of the book worth reading, which could be read completely separately as telling background on the Genocide, are the two accounts drawn from the notes and experiences of non-fictional Johannes Lepsius a German activist priest who tried to intervene on the side of the Armenians. Chapter 5 of Book I (the novel is divided into 3 sections) entitled "Interlude of the Gods" describes his meeting with Enver Pasha, one of the three Turkish leaders in charge of Turkish war efforts, the man behind the orders to exterminate the Armenian people. It is as chilling as if it were 25 years later and he was meeting with Adolph HItler. Chapter 1 of Book 3, which has the same title starts with a chance encounter with Enver Pasha again but mostly concerns a meeting Lepsius may have had (I'm less sure that this was an actual event) with the leader of a secret Sufi society who agrees to funnel aid to the Armenians on Lepsius' behalf where it is possible.

A most memorable read with a very useful list of characters and a glossary of Turkish and Armenian terms at the back. Lepsius' encounter alone makes it worth having and this chapter could easily be used in the classroom to acquaint students with the particulars of the Armenian Genocide as part of a unit on genocide studies.

Highly recommended.

Armed Resistance Saved Lives
By Acute Observer
The Forty Days of Musa Dagh

Franz Werfel was born in Prague, graduated from the University of Leipzig, and became a lecturer in philosophy at age 22. During WW I he served in the German Army on the Russian front. After his trip to Damascus in 1929 he learned about the Armenian people. He became a writer in Vienna and wrote this book in 1932-33. Then he fled to Paris to escape the Nazi occupation of Austria. Chapter 5 of Book One is based on the historic records of a conversation between Enver Pasha and Pastor Johannes Lepsius. [You should always leave early for an important meeting.] The Turks ordered the deportation of the Armenians to desert lands that even Bedouins avoided. The purpose was annihilation. Those who survived the march would perish in the desert. This novel is divided into three Books and eighteen chapters on its 824 pages.

In the past weapons were distributed to the people. Later an order came to disarm the Armenian population (Chapter 6). But without registration this was impossible. The rifles were carefully buried in a graveyard. [If found, they cannot be connected to any house.] Reliable information said the people would be taken away, their houses and property taken by others. The rich and learned will be targeted. The Armenians held a meeting to decide what to do. Banishment meant a slow death. Will the people of these seven villages wait to be transported or take up arms and seek refuge in the mountains of Musa Dagh? The absence would have to be masked. Only three days to prepare! Families would stay together, other work would be in common. Surreptitiously supplies were carried from the villages. The Turkish gendarmes arrived to begin deportation. (Chapter 7 of Book One). But the villagers left in the night to find a refuge in the mountains.

Book Two Chapter 1 tells about their life on the mountain. A thunderstorm and hail created unforeseen problems! Then they saw an infantry company marching into a village. Their ambush is successful, they gained rifles, ammunition, food, and uniforms. The captives were sent back with a warning. Chapter 2 describes life in the camp. Two weeks later the Turks returned with artillery. An avalanche of rocks attacked infantrymen. The Turks were defeated again. Life in the camp goes on, there are deaths and births. A surprise raid captured two howitzers! The seven deserted villages were filled with Arabs who were given these properties. A few deserters joined their ranks. Can they send a message for help? The next Turkish attack was more successful. A wind sent burning brush fires against the Turks. But increased losses caused dissension (Chapter 4).

Fever broke out in the camp for new problem. The Germans can’t do much for fear the Turks would switch sides (Book Three, Chapter 1). Pastor Lepsius visits Turks who object to the treatment of the “ermeni millet”. One of the messengers could not continue and tried to return. One night sheep were stolen from the unarmed shepherds! Anger erupted among the council members because of the threatened famine. A plague of locusts devastated the crops of Syria. Gabriel proposed a sneak attack at night to capture food and win freedom. Starvation caused dissension. A fire spread to the huts! People moved closer to the shore. Then the noise of a big gun caused changes. A French cruise came near to shore because of the glow of the fires. The sick were carried to the ship and kept separate from the well. Families were kept together when possible. Gabriel climbed the mountain for one last look, then slept. Will he be the last to go?

This novel told about a little-known event of the Great War. It tells about the dispossession of a people and their destruction by resettlement to another area. Such events have occurred over the ages. Longfellow’s “Evangeline” was one example in North America. Were there others?

Long book - a little over 800 pages - however ...
By laurel cobb
Long book - a little over 800 pages - however, it never ceases to be gripping. Werfel writes with exquisite, meticulous detail about people, their reasoning, their emotions. His descriptions of battles are written to read as if the reader is at the battle with none of the Hollywood bravado or titillating gore. The description of the famine atop Musa Dagh will haunt the sensitive reader for some time.

At the end of the book, the rescuing French rear-admiral said in remarking on their valiant feat: ...(you) emerged victorious in the desperate struggle for bare life. this deed merits not to be forgotten......You...have given proof of the most exalted of all heroisms - Christian heroism, which defends something more precious than hearth and home. (p 792)

This book reminds me of Island of the World by Michael O'Brien.

"If you haven't read Gary Brandner, you're missing a treat." ~ STEPHEN KING

The Howling Trilogy -- three books in one!

The Howling

Karyn and her husband Roy had come to the peaceful California village of Drago to escape the savagery of the city. On the surface Drago appeared to be like most small rural towns. But it was not. The village had a most unsavory history. Unexplained disappearances, sudden deaths. People just vanished, never to be found...

The Howling II

For Karyn it was the howling. The howling that had heralded the nightmare in Drago... the nightmare that had joined her husband Roy to the she-wolf Marcia and should have ended forever with the fire. But it hadn't. Roy and Marcia were still alive, and deadly... and thirsty for the most horrifying vengeance imaginable...

The Howling III

They are man. And they are beast. Once again they stalk the night, eyes aflame, teeth flashing in vengeance. Malcolm is the young one. He must choose between the familiar way of the human and the seductive howling of the wolf. Those who share his blood want to make him one of them. Those who fear him want him dead. Only one woman and one man want to help him. Even though they can't believe their ears. Or their eyes...

Howling Fun!
By David Zuzelo
A very entertaining collection for horror fans, and worth a read for anyone that has seen The Howling or it's buzumpteen sequels. THE HOWLING is a fast paced horror novel that, in my opinion, is more entertaining than the film it was made into. The prose is sharp and the pacing is lightning fast. HOWLING 2 is a bit odd, and probably the least of the three, sticking with the Survivors of the original book being stalked by two of the main baddies from Drago. It's short, but has a lot of emphasis on running away from horror than showing actual horror. For a clearer sequel check out Howling 3, it adds to the first book explaining more of the original town and is much more expansive in setting than the other entries.

Well presented and if you like your horror to feel pulpy with a side of sexy, this is for you.

Three great werewolf tales!
By Constant Reader
Three great werewolf novels together in a trilogy set! Convenient and it's cheaper than buying the novels separately. How great is that?!! Sure, you can buy the paperbacks one at a time but this trilogy package is currently only available for the Kindle and it comes your way courtesy of the folks at Books of the Dead Press.

As for the novels themselves, they have aged well over the years and haven't lost any of their edge. They are neither too long nor too short and they tie together nicely as a trilogy but each could be considered to be a stand-alone novel.

Gary Brandner creates characters that we come to care about as they evolve while he piles on the suspense, throws in a sprinkling of humor and a pinch of sensuality and lets it all simmer before blowing the lid off in an explosive climax.

If you are into werewolf tales and don't mind stories set in the late 1970s and early 1980s, then you can't go wrong with these three fantastic tales.

Who Knew?
By chh1138
I'm a huge fan of the original Howling film. The others...not so much. It was on TV recently, and I noticed in the credits that it was based on the book by Gary Brandner. I had completely missed this in the countless other times I'd watched the movie! So, I hopped on Amazon to see if it was available, and discovered that it was a trilogy! Awesome!

Werewolves have always seemed to play second fiddle to vampires (and now zombies), and there just not enough stories about them.

If you're a fan of werewolves, The Howling movie(s), or just horror in general, but this trilogy. You won't be disappointed.

No Magic Bullet: A Social History of Venereal Disease in the United States Since 1880, by Allan M. Brandt

From Victorian anxieties about syphilis to the current hysteria over herpes and AIDS, the history of venereal disease in America forces us to examine social attitudes as well as purely medical concerns. In No Magic Bullet, Allan M. Brandt recounts the various medical, military, and public health responses that have arisen over the years--a broad spectrum that ranges from the incarceration of prostitutes during World War I to the establishment of required premarital blood tests.

Brandt demostrates that Americans' concerns about venereal disease have centered around a set of social and cultural values related to sexuality, gender, ethnicity, and class. At the heart of our efforts to combat these infections, he argues, has been the tendency to view venereal disease as both a punishment for sexual misconduct and an index of social decay. This tension between medical and moral approaches has significantly impeded efforts to develop "magic bullets"--drugs that would rid us of the disease--as well as effective policies for controlling the infections' spread.

A Great History of Morality and Medicine
By Jack H.
No Magic Bullet creates a very detailed, extremely well researched volume on the evolution of healthcare. The progression through the various phases of modern thought may seem entertaining or absurd in hindsight yet Brandt very carefully recreates the time period making the rise and fall of each idea seem appropriate, regardless of their absurdity.

If you are looking for an entertaining read, look elsewhere. No Magic Bullet is geared towards academics or professionals. It is not a difficult volume but it is not a whimsical read either. The level of detail and research put into this text indicate a profound passion and understanding of medicine in the proper historical context.

I'll agree with the first review, some of the information may seem dated, but if you're writing about history it makes little difference. If you're looking for cutting edge information on AIDS and the developments made in the past ten years; look elsewhere. But if you want a social progression spanning through some of medicine's interesting periods this is an excellent resource.

I highly recommend this volume for anyone that might be remotely interested in sociology, healthcare, or history.

Data mining book focusing on clustering
By Sandro Saitta
I decided to start with this book as I think it is the most convenient to start in the data mining field. One big advantage of the book is the way data mining techniques are explained. It is mainly based on textual and graphical explanations. There is little equations, only what is necessary to implement the algorithms.

This book widely cover areas such as data preparation and understanding, classification, anomaly detection, association analysis and clusering. Although the book has a strong emphasis on the two last ones, nearly all standard data mining techniques are at least briefly discussed. However, this book does only have a fiew pages about kernel methods for example. Indeed, it is normal, as kernel methods are more suitable for machine learning (I mean making prediction) than data mining (I mean looking for description).

Therefore, this book is:

* able to explain data mining without thousands of equations

* a good way to start with data mining

* covering nearly all standard data mining techniques

* focused on association analysis and clustering

and it is not:

* a good book for kernel methods and other advanced techniques

* written in the statistical nor in the database perspective

My comment: if you are in the data mining field and not comming from mathematics or databases, then you really should buy this book.

superb description of clusters
By W Boudville
As databases keep growing unabatedly, so too has the need for smart data mining. For a competitive edge in business, it helps to be able to analyse your data in unique ways. This text gives you a thorough education in state of the art data mining. Appropriate for both a student and a professional in the field.

The extensive problem sets are well suited for the student. These often expand on concepts in the narrative, and are worth tackling.

The central theme in the book is how to classify data, or find associations or clusters within it.

Cluster analysis gets two chapters that are superbly done. These summarise decades of research into methods of grouping data into clusters. Usually hard to do, because an element of subjectivity can creep into the results. If your data is scattered in some n-dimensional space, then clusters might exist. But how to find them? The chapters show that the number of clusters and the constituents of these can depend on which method you adopt, and various initial conditions, like [essentially] seed values for clusters, if you choose a prototype cluster method like K-means.

The descriptions of the cluster algorithms are succinct. Why is this useful? Because it helps you easily understand the operations of the algorithms, without drowning you in low level detail. Plus, by presenting a meta-level comparison between the algorithms, you can develop insight into rolling your own methods, specific to your data.

Part of my research involves finding new ways to make clusters, and the text was very useful in explaining the existing ideas.

Good overview, but needs to include real-world case studies
By Dr. Lee D. Carlson
Data mining could be considered to be "Artificial Intelligence Lite", since it deals with many of the same issues in learning, classification, and analysis as they occur in the field of artificial intelligence but does not have as its goal the construction of "thinking machines." Instead, the emphasis is on practical problems that are important in business and industry, even though the solutions of many of these problems makes use of techniques that a thinking machine should be expected to have. Data mining has become an enormous industry, and has even been the subject of political and legal concerns due to the efforts of some governments to mine data on its citizens. This book gives a general overview of data mining with emphasis on classification and associative analysis. Anyone who is interested in data mining could read the book, but some rather sophisticated background in mathematics will be needed to read some of the sections. Pseudocode is given throughout the book to illustrate the different data mining algorithms. There are also exercises at the end of each chapter, but noticeably missing in the book is the inclusion of real case studies in data mining. The inclusion of these case studies would alert the reader to the fact that data mining is of great interest from the standpoint of business and industry, and would lessen the belief that data mining is just another academic field or just another branch of statistics.

Speaking somewhat loosely, the goal of data mining is to find interesting patterns in massive amounts of data or the classification of such patterns. This entails of course that one have a notion of what is "interesting" and one of the main problems in data mining is to find suitable `interestingness measures'. And since one is typically dealing with large amounts of data, one must use various statistical sampling and preprocessing techniques to massage the data and obtain a `representative' sample of the original data. In addition, one must be able to handle data that is `anomalous', i.e. data that has characteristics that are markedly different from most of the other data, or that has attributes that are unusual if compared with typical values for those attributes. These issues and techniques are discussed in detail in the first three chapters of the book, where the authors outline some of the bread-and-butter topics needed for effective manipulation of data.

The real substance and power of data mining comes from its role in classification and for discovering interesting patterns in huge data sets. The authors, in chapters 4 - 7, discuss various powerful techniques for data classification and association analysis. Association analysis in particular has been used quite extensively in recent years, due to the use of market basket transactions in on-line purchasing and the goal of marketers to learn the purchasing behavior of their customers. Association analysis uncovers relationships in the marketing data in the form of `association rules'. For disjoint itemsets X and Y, an association rule is a logical implication expression between these itemsets that has a certain `strength' that is measured by its `support' and `confidence.' The support measures how often a rule is applicable to a given data set, while the confidence measures how frequently the items in Y appear in X. The support reflects the ability of the rule to be not due to chance alone, while the confidence measures the reliability of the rule inference. The collection of all association rules that can be formed from a data set is too large to be practical and so strategies must be developed to prune the number of rules. The authors discuss in detail various methods for dealing with this computational drawback, such as `frequent itemset generation' and `rule generation.'

The detection of anomalies consists of the identification of `outliers', which as the name implies are data objects that lie "far away" from the other data objects. It remains of course to quantity what it means to be "far away" and for this reason this branch of data mining, as the author points out, is sometimes called `deviation detection' or `exception mining'. The omission of outliers is sometimes justified, since they are merely artifacts that only serve to alter the statistics of a particular data set. However, sometimes their presence signals important information, if not a major scientific discovery. Data mining therefore must contain tools that detect anomalies intelligently and efficiently. The authors discuss anomaly detection in fair detail, emphasizing the statistical techniques that are available to do it. They classify the techniques for anomaly detection as being `unsupervised', `supervised', and `semi-supervised'. As the name implies, supervised anomaly detection requires the existence of a training set with both anomalous and "normal" data with each class being labeled as such. When these labels are unavailable, one has to perform unsupervised anomaly detection, and for this approach to work the anomalies must be distinct from one another. If the normal data is labeled but the anomalies are not, one must do semi-supervised anomaly detection. The only weakness in the authors' discussion is that they do not include real-world case studies that illustrate the different techniques, such as clustering and density methods.

Creepy Tales!
By Precy
These are awesomely creepy tales!

THE DREAM HOUSE : I wrote this so of course I love it! hehehe :)

BLOOD AND INK by Mindy McGinnis : Quite unexpected ending that may have sent me snickering (because I'm sometimes immature)--but I'm sure it's a horrific end for...some people.

THE SOUND OF THE CHAIN by R.S. Mellette : Okay, this one terrified me. I had that uncomfortable, inward-cringing feeling because, while this is not your typical blood-and-gore horror (there's no gore and it's still terrifying!), the idea of this story coming true to life is enough to curdle one's blood. The expert build-up of suspense had me on my toes, too. Well done!

A SECRET KEPT IN SHAME by A.M. Supinger : I had the pleasure of beta-reading this, and let me just say that A.M. Supinger knows how to evoke vivid imagery, as well as create intriguing characters that you can oddly sympathize with despite their villain status.

THE GODS WITHIN by Justin Holley : Justin Holley is a master horror writer (I have had the pleasure of beta-reading his novel-length works), and this one is grim and disturbing in a creeptastic way!

THE WILD HUNT by Sarah Glenn Marsh : I loved the suspense in this story, and not knowing where it was heading to, or what I was going to find in the end. And the ending didn't disappoint, bringing the story to full circle!

CORRUPT by Kim Graff : Disturbing on so many levels. How do you decide who's right and who's wrong, especially when you've been brought up to believe in a certain truth? This reminds me of cults and the brainwashing that goes with their teaching. Except there are no cults in this story.

TIME TO PRAY by E.B. Black : Another favorite of mine! I'm still unnerved by this.

LOST SOLES by Madeline Mora-Summonte : A bit heartbreaking. Very suspenseful.

THE TROLLS by Kay Elam: Loved this one, too. Strange and unexpected and excellent character voice!

THE ICE TREE by Charlee Vale : Pretty imagery with a sad, creepy conclusion.

LOST by Matt Sinclair : Short but emotion-filled. Honestly, I felt sad reading this. But there's also just the right amount of spine-tingling factor to close this anthology with that ending.

A quality variety of horror
By Amazon Customer
Excellent choice for those who are looking to pee their pants. The great thing about horror, as a genre, is that people are frightened by different things; sometimes redundant tropes make it hard to get into a scary story, but this anthology has a nightmare or two for everyone.

I suggest reading it at night, under the covers, during a thunderstorm...:)

These aren't bedtime stories to read to your children!
By NashFlash
This is the kind of book we used to read with a flashlight under the covers. It's scary, but not always in an obvious way. The twelve authors approached their subject matter from twelve different ways. I suspect I'll still be thinking about some of the stories in the days and weeks to come. The stories are short enough that they are a quick read, but long enough to leave a lasting impression. Not for the weak at heart!
