The commands examined are Northern Command, Pacific Command, Central Command, Southern Command, European Command, and Africa Command; each plays a key role in maintaining national and international security. The analyzed aspects of each command include areas of responsibility, subcommands, priorities, threats faced, and engagement institutions. "Combatant commands are permanent features of the U.S. security community with serious links to communities around the world. While the commands have their challenges, they provide conduits to groups and organizations that might otherwise be reluctant to tie themselves overtly to the U.S. government because of domestic concerns they have."
