Very nice book

The book's format is the same as in the rest of the series - contents is arranged in a series of questions, each "answered" with a series of photographs. There is hardly any text apart from photo captions.
The contents pretty much follows model building sequence. Here's the approximation of table of contents:

Some observations to put it in context.
. the author uses highlight and shadow painting to add depth - I'd call it "Spanish way"
. using resin / PE parts is limited to short chapter about cockpits
. a lot of space is devoted to detailing - without using aftermarket products
. painting NMF is shown airbrushing Tamiya chrome silver followed by filters to differentiate panels
. painting wood is shown by airbrushing "wavy lines" with masks over base color to simulate grain
. stretched sprue, brass and steel wire is used for aerials and rigging
. scale is rarely mentioned, but from the gallery I'm guessing everything is shown on 48th scale models
. emphasis is on WWII fighters
Beginners should be careful - the amount of material can be overwhelming, and I imagine trying to use every single technique shown here on one's first model would end up in a disaster. But at the same time advice given in this book is solid and well illustrated - and as such good to learn from. Intermediate modelers will no doubt be able to learn a few tricks, and should appreciate seeing how nice results the author was able to achieve in relatively simple way. Gallery at the end is very nice - models are impressive (in "Spanish way") and photographs very clear.
For me the book's main strengths are detailing without aftermarket parts, deep treatment of painting details and weathering.
Overall I do not regret this purchase.

F.A.Q.: Planes

I purchased this book only because I had the F.A.Q.: Armor.
I really like the Armor edition and have applyed some techniques to
my "skills" in building tanks and such... So when I saw the :Planes version
of the F.A.Q., I had hoped that the information would be as good.
In fact, I was suprised that this version was better, for me, then the
Armor version because of the ease that the author explains his methods
in picture format..
I purchased the Accurate Minatures, TBM-3 model and on A.M. website was
the photo build of their TBM-3, with the builder the same guy who either
wrote this book or was a major contributor...(J. M. Villalba)...
I liked his techniques and the finished product of his build so this book
was absolutly perfect for me.

An excellent reference

The quality of the photos and the true step-by-step nature of the book, covering techniques from the basic to the advanced, make this an excellent reference and "how to" for the scale modeller. J-M's models have appeared in the French modelling magazine "WingMasters" for many years and his articles have always been informative and inspirational.
As another reviewer mentions, the author finishes his models via methods often referred to as the "Spanish School" - strong contrasts, shadows and highlights. But this is not a criticism and does not detract from the usefulness of the book - the modeller can moderate these tones to arrive at his or her desired results.
What is useful is the illustration of detailing without using aftermarket products, the existence of which can be daunting to the new modeller, who may assume he/she needs these products in order to have a "complete" model. J-M shows techniques using simple materials which give convincing results.
This book is both an excellent "how to" and an inspiration for modellers everywhere. Highly recommended.
