Received this book last week and could not put it ...

Received this book last week and could not put it down! I have gone back and forth between eating organic chicken, being vegetarian, and vegan for 5 years...I finally made the decision a month ago to go completely plant based and also prove to my very carnivorous son that you can get "cut" eating only plants. However, all of the information out there on how exactly to lose weight while maintaining and building muscle eating a plant based diet falls short, is confusing, or just plain doesn't make sense from a health point of view. UNTIL, I read this book! Robert tells his story, includes many vegan bodybuilders stories, gives workout routines AND meal plans! I really wasn't expecting to get in all in one place! The stories are inspirational while being believable and also doable. I understand so much more about how the body functions and how to get results. DEFINITELY worth every penny.

Vegan or not this is the best clear guide to getting shredded!

Fantastic book if you are vegan or not. Great advice on what to eat, also some delicious recipes included! Workout advice is solid and information on why veganism is good for your body is presented in a non-judgmental, clear and logical way. Something I will read over and over to keep me on track and you HAVE to try the Way Better Mac and Cheese - out of this world :)

THE HANDBOOK FOR VEGAN BODYBUILDING

I bought Robert’s first book back in 2012, about a year after first trying to go vegan. I was about 260lbs, then lost about 40lbs in my first year of going vegan without even trying. The problem was, I felt like I still had a significant amount of body fat and wanted to do something about it. I started working out at the gym, but had no clue about nutrition or lifting weight. Vegan Bodybuilding and Fitness guided me for a couple of years and I was able to make significant strength gains in the gym eating only plants. For example, my bench press 1 rep max went from 205lbs to 330lbs in about 2 years. During this time, I also gained 20lbs, while bodyfat % declined from 26% to 22%.

Fast-forward a couple of years. I saw that Robert was writing a new book, SHRED IT, and I ordered a copy as soon as it was available. I was eager to cut down some of the body fat that remained from my pre-vegan days. I was sitting around 240lbs at 22% bodyfat. In this book, Robert details the changes he’s made throughout the years to his diet, transitioning from protein heavy mock meats, to a whole foods plant based approach while dropping body fat.

There are a few things about this book that I thought were super helpful.
1. There are multiple case studies of vegan transformations in the book. These are real people that you can find on social media -Very inspiring stories.
2. There are also about 60 pages of recipes from vegan athletes. From these, you’ll be able to get an idea of how much food you actually need to eat. I think one of the common pitfalls of veganism is simply under-eating. I was amazed at the results I obtained after increasing my food intake.
3. And finally, there are about 50 pages of plant-based athletes. This is great to point you in the direction of other forums in which these athletes contribute to the vegan athlete body of knowledge. Most of these people are active on social media where they share their experiences and thoughts on vegan nutrition and fitness topics.

I’ve included a picture of my own transformation after reading SHRED IT. The two pictures are one year apart, February 2015 to February 2016. 240lbs at 22% bodyfat to 225lbs at 18% bodyfat. Since then, I’ve been able to cut another 15lbs, and I’m now sitting at 210lbs, 16% bodyfat; this is the lightest and leanest I’ve ever been as an adult. I’m still on my way to getting “shredded” with slow, sustained weight loss and muscle gain. My goal is to get around 200lbs at 10% bodyfat.

Robert’s advice has been invaluable! For a super small investment, there is a ton of knowledge packed in SHRED IT and it will pay back in no time.

Mario F. Triola is a Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Dutchess Community College, where he has taught statistics for over 30 years. Marty is the author of Essentials of Statistics, Elementary Statistics Using Excel, and Elementary Statistics Using the Graphing Calculator, and he is a co-author of Biostatistics for the Biological and Health Sciences, Statistical Reasoning for Everyday Life,and Business Statistics. He has written several manuals and workbooks for technology supporting statistics education. Outside of the classroom, Marty has been a speaker at many conferences and colleges. There must be a better stat book out there

Really doesn't explain with enough clarity. This book gets lost in its own inability to convey the complex topics of statistics. In all fairness, I did not use the CD. Thought I had rented this book, I will definitely be donating it. I cannot recommend this book.

About the Author

RENILSON, MARTIN (Prof) has been working in the field of Ship Hydrodynamics for over 35 years. He established the Ship Hydrodynamics Centre at the Australian Maritime College (AMC) in 1983, and was Director of the Australian Maritime Engineering Cooperative Research Centre in 1992. He started the Department of Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering at AMC in 1996, which he ran until 2001 when he was appointed Technical Manager, Maritime Platforms & Equipment for DERA/QinetiQ in the UK. In 2007 Professor Renilson returned to Australia and set up his own company, conducting maritime related consulting. He also held a part time chair in hydrodynamics at AMC, now an institute of the University of Tasmania. In 2012 he was appointed inaugural Dean of Maritime Programs at the Higher Colleges of Technology, United Arab Emirates, to start maritime education for the country. He is also an Adjunct Professor in Hydrodynamics at the University of Tasmania, Australia.

Mostly harmless

An interesting read, but for the most part a harried chronicling of people and trends (mostly people) in a hyper dynamic space. A lot of Nobel laureate name dropping (to which, to their credit, they admit!). Has the feel of someone trying to get a book out there to take advantage of the thirst for new insight. Some good brain candy.

Would have expected a better "primer" on how block chain actually works. Given the audience this tome appears aimed at, a few paragraphs ("How this worldwide ledger works") seems a bit under-serving - particularly for such an avowedly history-changing paradigm. Readers must understand this thing before trusting it, which for the most part is mysterious and geeky. Demystification would help move blockchain out of the comfort zone of PhD's into the realm of the mere unwashed (in which this reviewer sits). And nothing on the mystery surrounding Satoshi himself - what's up with that? Given that we're dealing with a new trust paradigm, doesn't the fact of his anonymity (existence?) not at least merit some comment?

Only part I would recommend is found at Chapter 10 "Showstopper issues"... Ironic, of course but best analysis is here!

Excellent, clear & concise. I found this a great discussion about the possibilities of Blockchain. It covers present applications, and then takes the reader beyond the now into the realm of possibility! All the while based in realism, some ideas may flourish, some may fail. I recommend it to anyone wanting a foundational understanding of Blockchain.

The most interesting, groundbreaking book I have read in years. This has got to be one of, if not the most, authorititive books out there on the blockchain. It does not focus on technical matters and can be read by a lay person not very familiar with how blockchain technology and cryptography work. Nor is it simply about Bitcoin (blockchains are about much more than Bitcoin). Less about how it works, than about how blockchain technology has the potential to transform the spheres of commerce, finance, management, public administration, politics, government and society in general (not to mention other applications). Must surely be compulsary reading for anyone wishing to explore how to create and exchange value, devise new business models and futureproofing in this age of information and big data. It is not however a book targeted only at e-commerce of financial services people. The authors explain how the blockchain could be a force for good, improving the outcomes for millions of people, particularly those in developing countries who are currently excluded from the financial system and the formal economy. They remind us of course that as with any other technology the blockchain is 'neutral', in that it is not inherently a 'good' or a 'bad' thing; it depends on how people choose to deploy it.

Grade 7 Up-This collection of 18 short stories by recognized children's and young adult authors explores the various meanings of gay/lesbian identity in the lives of teenagers. The book begins and ends with thoughtful commentaries by Bauer, and each story is followed by an afterword by its author that ranges from ho-hum to fascinating; the best tell the "story behind the story" and reveal the ways in which gay/lesbian issues or individuals have touched the authors' lives. Most feature white, middle-class, suburban/urban milieus, although several stories have a more diverse cast than is generally found in YA fiction. All seek to convey the very mixed emotions that accompany the acceptance of sexual difference at an age that places a high value on conformity to an established norm. Although the title story is a humorous fantasy featuring a camp fairy godfather who comes to the aid of a gay-bashing victim, most of the tales are realistic portrayals of contemporary YAs. In Nancy Garden's "Parents Night," an unexpected reconciliation occurs between a young lesbian and her father, while in Bauer's "Dancing Backward," the trauma of two young women's boarding school expulsion is offset by the revelation of their love. In Lois Lowry's "Holding," a young man returns from the funeral of his father's partner and finally tells his best friend that his father is gay, while James Cross Giblin's "Three Mondays in July" captures the isolation of small-town life in the early '50s. As is the case with most short story collections, the overall quality is uneven, but the best stories are memorable. A book for any teen...

What an awesome book! "Am I Blue?" is a collection of sixteen stories dealing with what it's like to grow up as a gay or lesbian teenager. The story that came closest to me personally was M.E. Kerr's "We might as well all be strangers" because it talks about a Jewish girl who comes out to both her mother and her grandmother. Surprisingly, her grandmother is much more accepting of the girl's sexuality since she had visited Nazi Germany under Hitler and knew what it was like to feel excluded. And in a twist of irony, the girl's mother says that her grandmother would be upset if she found out - perhaps just an indication that we don't know our parents quite as well as we think that we do! As it is my family, tolerance has appeared to have skipped a generation from grandparents to grandchildren, making the generation inbetween "strangers" in the family. To quote the book... "strangers take a long time to become acquainted, especially when they come from the same family."
Another story that I liked was "Am I Blue?" by Bruce Coville since it has let me see the world in shades of blue rather than black and white. Editor Marion Dane Bauer's contribution, "Dancing Backwards", is not only well-writen, but also has a good moral: don't look to others for direction - trust yourself. Finally, "Three Mondays in July" by James Cross Giblin was just the most fascinating story in the entire book. It helped me put a good perspective on what it would have been like to grow up gay in 1951.
Overall, as I said, the book was excellent. And the best part is that you don't have to be gay to read the book or to appreciate the stories - I'd bet that straight readers would get just as much out of the book as the intended gay audience! If you're thinking about reading it - don't hesistate! It will please even the most cynical readers :)

We need more books like this one...

This is a wonderful book. It's funny, it's involving, it's moving, it's just fabulous. Not only that, it can do so much good. These stories are honest and this book is one no teen should go without reading. I can honestly say this book is one of the best I've ever read and it's probably going to be the first thing I give my parents when I come out to them, yes I know, it's time already! Hey, I'm only 15, give me a few more years!

This book has something for everyone...

As a straight college student who has many gay friends, I thought this book was phenomenal. Am I Blue is a collection of 16 different short stories dealing with common problems facing the gay community. I feel that there is something that everyone can take away from this book, gay and straight alike. I was really touched by each characters story and now I can better understand what the gay community is going through. Am I Blue does a really good job of putting the truth out there. So many people are scared to talk about controversial issues such as homosexuality but this book does not sugarcoat it. Topics such as sex, confusion, homophobia, and harassment are all addressed in these short stories.
The many authors that contributed to this work took time in their writing. You can tell that they were not just writing these stories to pay the bills. There was passion and concern, a real drive to make a difference with each and every author. They each took a personal risk and put themselves on the line when they spoke out. I admire that.
When reading this book, one must keep an open mind. Because like I said many controversial issues are discussed. If one goes in with a set idea in their head then, one will not be able to except the book for what it is really worth.
Again, Am I Blue is an amazing book. I would recommend it to anyone with an open mind who is looking for some comfort or is just wanting a glimpse of what it is like to be gay in this world.

At the same time, they feel uncomfortable when they are told that their own inflexibility is what distances them from their desires.

This book recommends changes in our beliefs about money. Without an open mind, all of the answers will slip through the cracks. The Money Code holds information that is meaningful from a certain mindset - the kind of mindset which this book wishes to develop in listeners who are ready and willing to embrace it.
